Parenting after a Loss

Please recommend your potty

Now there's a subject line I never thought I'd write... lol!  We're not in any hurry, but I like to shop around & get a good deal, so I'm thinking about getting a little potty seat for when we train DD.  Eventually, I'll want her to have one of those fold out ones or something like that, that will fit on top of the adult toilet, but while she's learning she'll still be so tiny I think I'd rather let her stay close to the ground.

Any advice/recommendations are much appreciated, thanks!!!

  • We've got a first years potty chair that can also be used as a step stool. We bought an insert to use too (it's easier to take with us when we go out). Our potty chair was maybe $15. They also make potty chairs with removable inserts that can be used on "big" potties (fisher prices has a couple).

  • Honestly.. I would totally skip the potty chair and just get the seat for the big potty.. My neices and nephew all had no problem with these (my one neice started at 18 months with the little insert).. they just used a little stool to get on the potty. My friends little girl, when she was 3, was totally potty trained, but would ONLY go on her baby potty so if they were out in public, she wouldn't go.. I don't want this to happen to my DD.. and also the thought of emptying and cleaning the baby potty skeeves me out..

  • I'm a major lurker but thought I'd chime in about the potty. We have been using this?https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2309032

since DD was 6 weeks old. She had lots of pooping issues and would always go on the potty. Now she's almost 8 months and hasn't pooped in her diaper in 3 or 4 months. It's awesome (especially since we use cloth diapers). It's small enough that she can sit comfortably. It packs up and goes with us everywhere (even to Hawaii!). I tell people it was my best baby investment--for $10! We also have a potty ring to sit on the toilet, but so far she prefers the Baby Bjorn potty.?

My DD was sorta the same way, except the insert terrified her at first (she liked being closer to the ground). She'd use the insert if we were out in public, but we had to get her used to the autoflush toilets and hand-dryers. She's 3 1/2 and uses the big potty all by herself, we only bring the insert out with us now and she only uses it at home when she goes #2.

Lysol or clorox wipes are your friend, but yeah cleaning them out can be icky.

I've worried about this, but then I also want her to be independent & able to go potty w/o my help getting up on there.  It seems like it would be a big fall for a little girl, y'know?

Our plan was to have a little potty on the floor.  We aren't going to push it, but just let it be something she can try & if she goes, great, if not, no big deal.  She's still not walking a whole lot on her own, she usually prefers to hold my pinky finger.  But once she's really walking independently, that's when we'd introduce the potty.

Of course, once she's big enough & a little older, we'd take that away & just have her on the regular toilet.  It worked just fine for my mom when she trained my 2 sisters & I that way, although we never had the little seat that went on top of the toilet.  We sort of skipped that step.  Anyway...

What I'm really debating is whether to get one w/"bells & whistles" or just a plain seat.  I'm leaning toward a plain seat b/c I don't want the fun stuff to be a distraction.

Sorry, didn't mean to ramble on...

  • For us, the bells & whistles meant added distractions for DD. We were afraid she'd spent more time playing with the gadgets than using it for it's intended purpose. DD liked being able to go on her own too, so having something down on the floor/at her level was great--she could just walk over, drop her pants, sit and go. She did way better using the "it's there if you need it" method rather than making her sit on it every hour method.

I will say the potty inserts are fantastic when you're out in public and the bathrooms are less than immaculate, you don't have to worry about dealing with a kid using a butt gasket. Just toss it in a plastic bag, then toss it back in your bag and you're good.

  • My MIL bought DS a potty with bells and whistles ( I asked her to get a simple one...) and he thought it was toy because it talked and played music.  I highly recommend getting one that doesn't do anything spectacular!!!!!!!
