Okay health professionals, I need an answer

Poor DH, I'm giving away TMI for him. He has been complaining for weeks, maybe months about symptoms related to his digestive system (At least thats the way it sounds). He's constantly blocked, but has tons of gas, still having trouble going to the bathroom. He just tonight said he could "see his heartbeat in his stomach" when sitting down. He gets a gurgling and burning feeling about 2 inches about his navel. He gets short of breath (which is not like him because he's very active), and it just messes with his breathing patterns. I've told him to go get a physical, because all he does is complain about it instead of seeing someone for it.

To add to it, he doesn't eat healthy at all, and hardly ever drinks water (says there is plenty of water in koolaid) His dad just died suddenly at 47 because of some kind of block in his aorta. I keep telling him that a DR is going to tell him to change his diet, and he wont. But I just don't know WHAT to tell him. Can anyone give me ANY help or ideas as to what this might be?

  • Not a health professional...but I've had a ton of GI issues over the years. Your dh's issue sounds like heartburn and constipation related to diet (ie. lack of fiber and excess of junk food) and  lack of water intake. Does he take any medications? Those can also cause constipation.

  • I'll say that hearing it from the doc can make a diff sometimes even if they say they won't change. My DH came home from the doc saying he wasn't going to do 'all that BS' and he is doing it anyway. Maybe try to get him to at least take a vitamin every day, and have him take a laxative in the meantime. It can't hurt ya know. I get one-a-day mens health for DH. I would say that if he isn't going to the doc then to tell him to shut it though! (no offense!) Tell him to take a vite and drink 1 glass of water in the morn for a week or so and see if it helps, if he see's a diff then he may be more prone to make little changes.
  • I would spend the next week mixing extra fiber into any meal that you prepare (green bottle, at the drug store, can't remember the name but you can cook with it because it doesn't expand) and encourage the extra water.

If that doesn't help in a week, he needs to see a DR.

Keep in mind that if you up his fiber intake, he will be EXTRA gassy until his body gets used to it.

And I am not a Dr, just a woman with lower intestine problems.

  • Could be a whole host of issues, but the first thing that comes to mind is a small bowel obstruction. While many people get these and they eventually pass (similar to constipation)...it is possible that the bowel and perforate and leak into the blood stream and cause sepsis. Again, likely just a simple case of constipation, but it might scare him enough to go to a doctor and like PP said, sometimes a doc saying it will actually get a person to DO something! Good Luck!
