Moms - Pack n Play and baby bigger than 15 lbs

I just noticed the warning on the bassinet attachment for the pack n play says that the bassinet should be removed when the baby is 15 lbs or the baby can push up onto his knees.. whichever comes first.

DS is 15 lbs now but is not sitting up.  If I take out the bassinet piece, I'm not going to be able to reach all the way down into the PnP to get him out (I'm short and it's pretty deep to reach in there!) so it's pretty much useless.

Did you stop using the bassinet piece when the baby got to 15 lbs?  Did you just not use it for a while if the baby couldn't sit up?

Re: Moms - Pack n Play and baby bigger than 15 lbs

  • Not a mom yet, but I noticed that too and we'd like baby in our room until 6 months, so I'm curious to see responses. I'm so clueless about baby size I didn't realize they could reach 15 lbs as early as 3 months or so. I'm thinking we may upgrade to an Arm's Reach co-sleeper when baby reaches 15 lbs...

  • We just stopped using DSs and moved him to his crib for night. I still use the bottom part during the day for naps in our room (since 2 kids napping together just does NOT happen).

I haven't seen any over 15 lbs though.  Could you use a step stool or something to reach down in there easier?   Hopefully you'll find something.

  • uh-oh, i never knew that and Cal's way over 15 lbs - probably 18 now and we still use it!!  i like having him that close and at that level but i guess for safety reasons we should use the lower part now.

  • My friend never read the weight limit and freaked out when she realized that the PNP bassinet was flexing/bowing under her son's weight. ?They hadn't done any crib-sleeping yet either, so that was an interesting transition.?

  • DS was over the weight limit by 2 1/2 months and I wasn't ready to move him to his room yet, so we got a mini crib for our room. I'd say he was about 18 lbs when we finally got him out of it and into his mini.

I was so paranoid about the fabric tearing, but nothing ever happened. There was a deep baby-shaped dent in it every morning though.

  • My son is 21 lbs and still takes his weekend naps in there. I'm not sure how comfortable it would be for a full night's sleep at this point though for him.

  • I was wondering the same thing because the other day while I put DD in I noticed it sunk in and you could totally see from the outside her weight was pushing it down..she almost 15lbs...we use the pnp during the day ..I like her being at that level..it is easier for me too since I am short...now I will have to put her  down below...booooooooooo
  • we have a pack and play downstairs that I use to put DS in while I make dinner or whatever downstairs.  He is over 17lbs now and i'm not sure how much it holds, but he kicks so much it seems like he will bring the whole bassinet part down.  the PNP originally had a newborn napper and we used that until recently.

I will say that I don't use my PNP much (not to sleep at night), so can't answer long term use of it, but I think he is fine for awhile in it (until it starts sagging which it doesn't).

He cosleeps (doesn't sleep in crib yet) and we used a bassinet that only did 15lbs anyway and he couldn't use that when he got to 12lbs or so as he was too big for it.

Hindsight I would have gotten a arms reach cosleeper...

  • I think this is why a lot of ppl opt for the Arms Reach Cosleeper if they plan to have the baby/ies in their room for awhile.?
  • Thanks for the ideas.  I actually have a co-sleeper that I used in my room until we put him in the crib.  I moved the co-sleeper to our guest room just to get it out of our room.  I think that has a wt limit of 25 lbs.

That's a good idea.. maybe I'll bring the co-sleeper downstairs to have him take naps during the day if I need it and I could even change him in that.  And then put the PnP away until he's sitting up and I can reach him!

I'm not terribly tall (5'3ish), but I didn't have much trouble get DDs out of it when we traveled a couple weeks ago.  I thought it might be an issue, but it wasn't bad.  We had both girls in one so I didn't even consider using the bassinet (15 lbs + 12 lbs).  You could at least give it a try before you spend the $ on a co-sleeper.
