3rd Trimester

What is the test for amniotic fluid?

There was a question posted earlier this afternoon about how someone was afraid they may be leaking amniotic fluid and some people responded that they can do a test that is "not so fun".

I'm a tad concerned that there is a possibility that I may be leaking a bit of amniotic fluid because since yesterday I feel like me panties are wet all the time. I have a doc appointment on Thursday and will bring it up then...but I'm just curious what is done for those that have experienced it.

  • I'm giggling at my typo "I feel like me panties are wet all the time" -- I'm apparently part leprachaun.

  • I've had 3 of these tests done and whoever said they were "not so fun" has lost their mind if they're talking about the same test I had.

They take a yellow strip of paper and put it to your vagina. The strip will turn blue if it's amniotic fluid. Never hurt at all.

  • I had the test also...I had basically a long Q-tip inserted and the doctor asked me to cough. Apparently the tip was supposed to turn a certain color if it was amniotic fluid...so similiar to the paper test. Piece of cake.

  • The "non-fun" amniotic fluid test is when they perform an amnio to test for lung maturity. If you're in premature labor (or in danger of premature labor), they need to know if LO will need steroid shots or not.
  • I know I am lurking 3rd tri prematurely, but I thought I would chime in as I also had the test and agree with PP - test was no biggie at all. I was worried about this too but was told by dr it would also feel like a constant trickling... its common to have lots of discharge when PG, so if you're just feeling wet, i wouldnt worry, but if you feel a constant trickling you may want to contact dr to be sure. ;)

  • Not sure if were talking about the same test or tests I had a 4 part one first the strip if it turned a certain color, then something they put  under a microscope, then I guess by just looking they can tell some how, and to triple check I had an ultra sound they divide your stomach into 4 and measure the fluid in each to make sure the levels are similar. None of them hurt at all.

  • When I thought I was leaking, they did the yellow paper Ph test and also did a swab (where they made me cough) and looked at it under the microscope. The Dr. said they were checking for a ferning pattern.
  • unless they try to collect the fluid.. called a wetsmear... it doesnt hurt. its called a ph test
  • The test I had seemed like a pap - q-tip up there, then put onto a paper strip.. the most painful part was that resident at the hospital doing it was a total hottie, ha ha..

  • I wonder if they're thinking of the fetal fibronectin or FFN.  And that, they are right, is no fun.  I've had 2 done and no one wants to tell you they're dry speculum exams.  Oy!

I know, my doctor did an FFN test a couple weeks ago and he totally didn't tell me it was a dry speculum exam.  He just did it and then said "hey, you did really good...didn't even flinch!".  I wanted to punch him.
