Preemies

umbilical hernia :(

i noticed my DS had a weird looking belly button last week, so we went to the pedi today because i suspected it was herniating... and i was right :( she said it's normal and especially for preemies, and it doesn't cause him pain or discomfort so she thinks its too small to be problematic, but we have to keep an eye on it and make sure it doesn't need surgical correction.?

i guess i should feel lucky because this is the first physical sign of prematurity either of the babies have displayed, and it's pretty minimal, but it still makes me sad!

in good news, he weighs 6 lb 2.4 oz now :) that is a total of 2 lbs in less than a month since coming home from the NICU! we made a stop over to the NICU after his pedi appt and donated a bunch of sleepers and onesies because he is officially in newborn size clothing and newborn size diapers! my girl is still in preemie size for both, but i think she's around the 5.5 lb mark so it wont be long before she can start wearing all her cute little newborn clothes too. ah, the things that are exciting for a preemie mom :)?

Re: umbilical hernia :(

  • DS had one of those as well. it drove DH nuts! then one day, out of the blue, it went away! sorry about the hernia. sounds like they're both doing really well otherwise!

  • My girls have umbilical hernias, too.  One of them seems quite big.  The pedi isn't impressed and said that they will just go away... by the time they are 5 (!).  I sure hope they are gone before then!

DS's hernia magically disappeared too, I think he was around 3 months...I'm amazed I can't remember anymore!  We had body part photos taken and of course it went away right after that - so his belly button pic is goofy, but that was a part of his newborn body :)

  • DD had one too. DH used to joke about how big it was- it looked like it was going to pop! It gradually started to get smaller and then magically disappeared. I'm sure your DS's will too! Thank goodness it isn't a hernia that needs surgery- DD had to have a bilateral inguinal hernia repair. Surgery sucks.

  • Robbie's was so icky it actually had a stretch mark! But he was about 4 months adjusted and it just started shrinking. Now you'd never know.

  • Add DS to the list of babies who had them. It just disappeared one day. Hopefully it does the same for yours :)

DS got his around the same age as your LO's & it went away by his 4 month appointment. It just started shrinking one day.

  • I was SO grossed out by DD's hernia!  It was the size of my thumb coming out of my 5 pounder!  It appeared at 5 weeks when her acid eflux peaked.  Her doctor said it would be gone by the time she was 2.  It was gone before she was 3 months old, it just disappeared one day.  Her belly button is almost an innie.
