Baby Names

How would you pronounce Alexandre?

We're having a hard time coming up with boy names that fit my DH's criteria of being a family name and having a Portugese tie or variation (he's half Brazilian), while still being okay to me (Guilherme, Vinicius, Bruno, etc. are NMS).  Alexandre is one of the only names that fits the criteria so far (we'd use Alex as a nn), but I've heard it pronounced both Alexander and Alexan-druh.  I don't like that the latter could sound like the girl name Alexandra.  Thoughts?

Other names that sort of fit our criteria include Breno, Matteo, Caio (first syllable rhymes with eye), Sebastiao, Caetano, and Tiago/Thiago, but DH seems to be into Alexandre at the moment.

  • I would pronounce it Alexander, unless somebody corrected me.  My SIL is Brazilian.  She gave me some great boy names.  Mateo is my favorite.  Other names on her list - Bastian, Tiago, Flavio.

  • In my head I would say Alexand-reh, but I think most people would look at it with a tendency to "Americanize" and just say Alexander...

BTW, I love love love Matteo!!

I would say it "Alex-ahn-druh" (but I'm a french teacher...)

I think Matteo or Tiago might be a little easier for English speakers.  I like those a lot.

  • The South American pronunciation of this name would be Ahh-lay-han-dray, which would be mispronounced constantly in the U.S.

    This?

  • Alex-ahn-dray, like almost Alejandre (the Spanish version). I think Matteo is a better fit for your criteria and would be easier for pronunciation.

I hope you have a girl and name her Gisele! I know a Brasilian named Gisele (Jiz-elle-ee) and I always thought that was such a cool name.

  • In seeing it I would have pronounced it Alex-an-dre (like alex and Andre combined)

I agree with PPs that I LOOOOOOOVE Matteo
