nifedipine experience???

I'll be 34 weeks tomorrow...

Went for a non-stress test yesterday and had some contractions.  I was discharged from triage with a prescription for nifedipine to take every 4 hours and placed on "modified" bed rest.  The medicine makes me feel loopy!

Will you pass along your experience?

Thanks you!

Re: nifedipine experience???

  • i was on it with my last pg from 32w-36w b/c of PTL.  I would feel loopy/light headed and like i couldn't breathe well for the first hour after I took it... i was also on it every 4 hours.

it's a blood pressure med - so will lower your BP a bit- hence the loopy feeling.

i ended up being induced at 36w b/c of other issues- so i'm not sure how long i would have gone... but they would have had me stop the procardia at 37w either way.

  • I was on nifedipine from 28-34w (I was also on ibuprofen from 23-32w). ?I really didn't notice any side effects. ?Be sure that you're drinking enough water. ?

I think that it's a little curious that your Dr. would prescribe meds this late in your pg. ?Mine took me off all meds at 34w b/c she said that after 34w, she would not stop labor b/c the babies do just as well outside as inside! ?She also stripped my membranes when I was 34.5w to try & induce labor (she was going to be out of town the following week & was trying to get me to deliver before she left...also, my bp was going up). ?At 34w, I was completely effaced & 4 cm dilated & the membrane stripping did not work. ?I STILL had to be induced to deliver at 35w6d. ?Good luck!

  • I also went on it at 34 weeks because my hospital will stop labor anytime before 36wks. The only side effect I noticed was a headache the first day or two. I went off the meds at 36wks and my water broke 3 days later.

    Good Luck!

  • I was on it from 30 weeks to almost 36 weeks.  I didn't notice any side effects, but for the first two weeks I was on it I was on hospital bedrest.  My vitals were being closely monitored and my BP never got low.  My BP actually started climbing while I was on it, so I imagine it helped me keep my babies in as long as I did.  If it hadn't been for that I pobably would have had PIH and would have had to deliver earlier.  As it was, I delivered at 35 weeks 6 days because I was starting to develop pre-e.

I hope the side effects ease up on you and the meds do their job!

  • I took it for 9 weeks...I felt icky the first couple days, but after that my body got used to it.
