Snarky and T-TTC

what have you guys been told about exercise?

hi everyone,

i won't start ttc until august but i'm anovulatory so we know i'll need fertility treatments (we'll try clomid first), and i lurk here sometimes trying to pick up IF information from you guys. i was wondering: what have you guys been told about whether/how much/what kind of exercise is okay in the weeks before ttc and during the 2ww? i keep seeing conflicting information on this so i'm pretty confused, and thought you guys might have some information or experience to share. thanks for any thoughts.

exercise as much (or in my lazy case, as little) as you want.

RE actually promoted exercise for me to lose some weight.   She also prescribed me diet pills because she really believed taking off a couple pounds would really benefit me.

  • you should ask your dr specifically. this is one that seems to be different for everyone.

my RE said absolutely no running. she says power walking, elliptical and/or swimming are okay. also strength training is okay, within reason. she said once i go on clomid she'll want me to take it easy after confirmed O.

  • I haven't changed anything, nor been told to change anything. My RE has not mentioned exercise at all and I figure if it was important he would have said something about it.

  • Yeah I hear conflicting info on this as well. My RE said I can do what want as long as I don't overdo it. Pretty vague.

It's obvious to me when I'm overdoing it, so I feel comfortable exercising. I know some people who are more hard core exercisers have a more difficult time making that distinction, though.?

  • My RE was unconcerned when I asked about exercise. The general rule for pregnancy is to not attempt to "advance" your training in anyway. So, unless your doctor says otherwise, that might be a good rule.
  • Some advice will change depending on your treatment (TI vs IUI vs IVF). I was given no advice one way or another by my RE.
  • One more thing: The thing that concerns docs about exercise is that too much of it can result in anovulatory cycles. Since you already have this problem, your doc may be more specifically concerned about your level of activity. Consider sharing with him/her exactly how much you do, and asking for advice.

  • I have asked my RE about this multiple times because I keep hearing conflicting info. Each time he has said there is no good research that shows moderate exercise has an impact on fertility. However, I have just been doing natural and clomid IUIs, and it may be different if you are doing injectibles or IVF and have a lot of mature follies (I remember hearing something about lots of activity being bad when there are lots of mature follies).

  • Exercise is great, continue what you have been doing, if you are a marathoner keep doing it, if a casual work out girl thats great too! The healthier you are the better chances to concieve!

  • I was told to continue my normal routine until I got to IVF.  The advice for an IVF 2ww is completely different (due to risk of ovarian torsion)

And I consider myself pretty darn healthy and had lots of trouble conceiving, so not sure what that comment was about
