Babies: 0 - 3 Months

x/d - does this sound weird to you? Any advice?

I am usually on BOTB, but my mom called with a question. I used to work with infants, and never had this come up. I thought it was unusual and never heard of it, so I figured, why not ask you guys??My mom just called me and said that our second cousin (whom I don't know) has a baby. He is four months old. She is going back to work and weaned him off of BF'ing She introduced him to a bottle but he will only drink from a...get this...Cup. ?I didn't even know 4 months old have that developed of muscles.?I told her to call her pedi. but have you ever heard of this??a lactation nurse only deals with BF, so the pedi advice was correct, right??edit- She is worried that the daycare she will be going to, will not spend the time doing this. I first questioned why she even introduced the cup to him...but regardless i think she should talk to her pedi.?

I wouldnt think that a baby that young could do that.

BTW-we have the same kinds of dogs! I have a blue merle sheltie and a red aussie.

  • Ya that sounds really weird to me.. DD is about to be four months and likes to "hold" her bottle and hold her paci in her mouth but i have a hard time seeing her try to drink for a cup.. does she mean sippy cup?
  • I've heard of this although I can't imagine it being easy. Do what works I guess!

I don't know, my g-ma told my mom cup. I figured, they held the cup up to his mouth. Ok I am glad I am not the only one that thinks this is strange.lol

And to the above poster, yay for shelties and aussies! I love them. They are so smart and great.??

  • A friend of mines DD was BF and refused a bottle completely. When my friend went back to work right around 4 months her DD drank her milk from a sippy cup.  At first you would have to still feed her but within about a month she was holding her own sippy cup (they used the ones with the big handles on the sides)

So its not completely weird to me even though it doesn't happen often.

My LC recommended cup feeding right away to avoid nipple confusion if we had trouble bfing.  We didn't have problems but she did say it takes a little longer to teach the baby and to actually do but is helpful for those who want to continue breast feeding.  I would ask a lc if you are concerned.
  • Thanks for your help! I hope it is a sippy cup they are using, as that seems like the best idea.
  • No first hand experience here (yet), but some just recommended the cup method to me b/c DD has been refusing bottles for quite some time now.
