I'm new to the whole process of pumping. How do you store your BM? Refrigerate? Freeze? For how long do you keep it? How do you thaw it if you freeze? What kind of storage do you use? Basically, what is your entire process? Also, how do you prep for pumping? Do you always sterilize?
Thanks a bunch!
Re: What is your process for storing BM?
Soon to celebrate the day we met, even if the day before marks when we said goodbye.
I EP so I store all the extra milk in the fridge Friday to Friday. Then on Friday night I pull out the extra ( it is all in 32oz containers and labeled w/ the date it was pumped) then I portion it out into 6oz's in a bottle then dump into a bag and keep doing this until it is all stored. I also then put about 10 bag in a big ziploc bag then freeze so that it is easy to pull for daycare. This takes me about 40 mins but I would rather do it all at once because I usually have about 120-180oz of leftovers from the week.
I have 2 sets of pumping stuff, I use each one 2x's before throwing in the dishwasher. In between I just rinse really good and if it is under 72 degrees where I am at then I leave it out, if not I put it in the fridge to stay "good".
I pump into the medila bottles as I have a medila pump. When I am done I transfer into the bags for freezing. All the bags go into my deep freezer as they can be kept up to 1 year in it. If I know that I will need to give DS a bottle that day or the next then I keep what I need in the bottle and it goes in the fridge. Right now we don't need to give him a bottle every day as I am still on leave, but when I go back to work my plan is to pump in the morning before leaving for work so DH has a fresh milk to give him, then I will pump around 10 am, he will be brought to me at my lunch (MIL is watching him and is willing to do this) and then I will pump in the afternoon (maybe around 2 or 2:30) The pumped milk will go to MIL for the next day. Then I will nurse at night. I hope to be able to pump at least 1 extra time while at home to be able to keep adding to my freezer stash. As for sterilizing, I run the bottles in the dishwasher. I rinse out my pump parts that need rinsing right away and then sterilize them once a day or run them in the dishwasher as well. To defrost the frozen milk we have a frozen BM defroster, you fill it with hot water and it defrosts it. It even has a gage that tells you if the water is too hot or cold. We can also use it to just warm up the BM.
I'm no expert, this is just a way that I've found works for me.
I tend to pump several times over the course of a day (My LO only nurses on one side usually and I block feed, so I pump the other breast every 2 feeds). I use the same collection bottle until it is full, then leave it in the fridge for the day. I hate to use a bag if we don't need it since they're so expensive, and we're trying to get him more used to the bottle. Between pumpings, I rinse out the flange and everything and leave it in the fridge. At the end of the day I wash with hot soapy water and sterilize.
Check out kellymom.com for info on timetables for freezing, thawing, and keeping at room temperature.
When I transfer into bags (every 2 days) I prep 5-6 oz portions and lay the bags flat in the freezer until frozen. After they're frozen, I transfer into a Rubbermaid shoebox. To thaw, I just microwave a pyrex bowl of water for a minute or so, then put the bag in it. I shake and swirl the bag until thawed and warm.
I think that's it. The only tip I really have is to taste your fresh BM so you will be able to tell if the frozen BM has gone bad.
