Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Stopped all but night time bottle....how did you stop it?

My son is finally drinking from the sippy during the day so we cut the mid day bottle first, the am bottle a couple weeks ago.....he now finally drinks up to 5 ounces of milk during the day in the sippy.  How did you stop the nighttime bottle?   He is 13 mo now and we cut out the other bottles at 12 mo

1.  Do you just give the milk in a sippy instead?

2.  Do you not give anything?

My son has dinner at 6:30 and by 7:15 gets 6 ounces and then a couple more at 7:45 when he is read a story and up in the nursery.

I just want the easiest way possible but am thinking it's going to be rough!

  • probably just slowly wean him. Maybe gradually do less at story time by doing more at 715. a little each day.

  • cold turkey.

We just stopped one night and he was fine.  There was a night when I had to give in and make him a bottle, but I just stayed strong.  He's completly over bottles.  We were at a birthday party where other babies had bottles, DS picked a bottle up ans just set it on the table next to the baby.  I think that the anticipation and fear of what might happen was worst than just taking the bottle away.

    good luck and stay strong!!

  • We did it cold turkey, kind of on accident. We were at IL's house late one night and he fell into SUPER deep sleep on the way home, so when we got home at 9pm we just put him to bed. He hasn't looked back since. We offer him a sippy of milk every night and let him walk around with it for an hour or so, but he usually doesn't drink much of it. GL!
  • We did cold turkey as well, but give him a sippy at dinner instead. He never looked back!

  • We did this at about 13 1/2 months.  I tried to give him a sippy of milk but it only made him mad so he doesn't get anything now. I thought that it would really mess him up at bedtime and put off doing it.  One day I just said that I was going to do it and never looked back.  He still sleeps just as well as he did before.  Good luck...I think it's harder on us than it is on them!
