At what point is it safe?

I know that crib mattresses are firm for a reason--so LOs don't suffocate if they put their faces in the mattress.  So of course we have a firm mattress and a fitted sheet that fits well.
That said, I wonder if it's safe to let DS nap on our bed on top of the down comforter.  I know that "the literature" says not to, but til what age does that apply?  DS is 20 pounds, 29" long and can roll from back to front and front to back and can hang out on his tummy for quite a while.  I feel like he's strong enough to handle a nap on the bed but I know I could be wrong.

Opinions?  Are any of you letting your LOs nap (with or without you) on your bed?

Usually I'm napping with him and I curl my arm around him so I know he's not rolling off.  Plus I have these really heavy, horrible Ikea pillows that I surround him with.  I know he can't push them off to get past them and they're not squishy enough to suffocate him.

However, you wouldn't let ds sleep on the down comforter.  Noted!

  • yeah for a couple reasons: suffocation hazard, plus if he spits up i gotta get it dry-cleaned which is a huge PITA

I can top the spit-up!  I was doing DS's nakey pictures for his 3-month "photo shoot" and he was in a horrible phase where he would fart and shoot out poop and --guess what?  He pooped on the bed.  It was awesome.

BTW: You don't have to dry-clean your down.  You can clean it with a detergent-free laundry soap (like Nikwax Down Wash) in the big front-loaders at the laundromat.  Which is a total drag, by the way.

This, except it's me bringing him to bed out of sheer exhaustion, anytime between 5-6:30am.
