BF Baby & Gas? Warning: Gross

DD has been having terrible gas for 4-5 days. She is EBF and my eating habits have not changed.  She normally poops with each feeding (yellow seedy runny poo), but now, along with the horrible gas she has stopped pooping as much, she just farts all the time and cries.  She was up all night last night, crying and farting these horrible smelly things.  This morning she pooped the most disgusting god awful smelling dark yellow/light brown sticky runny mess. She is obviously in pain from it as she is not normally fussy or a cryer.  has this happened to your LO? I have a call into the pedi, but no call back yet..

  • I'm no expert and I don't even know if this is an old wives' tale, but could it be something you ate?

  • Sounds like it might be diarrhea. Does she have a temperature?

  • She had a fever last Sunday, but it was gone by Monday. But her gas issues developed that same day.  We took her to the doctor Sunday evening, and they ran tests and found no major infection.  She also has a very runny, stuffed up nose. I think this must all be related.  I'm not getting much of an answer from my doctor. She hasn't slept much in 4 days and today was the second time she had that disgusting poop.  Her poop never smells bad like that, and she normally poops frequently and doesn't have gas. I keep telling them it's not normal, but they tell me that BF babies can go a week between poops and it's normal.  Uhhh, this is not normal for my baby!
  • Babies become more efficient at digesting BM as they get older so it's common for BF babies to not poop as often.  DS is 5.5 months old and recently went 5 days without pooping.  He used to poop at least once per day.  Now, he's going less often.  He was in good spirits though so my pediatrician said I shouldn't do anything about it.  I definitely find that when he goes longer between pooping, it's pretty gross when he finally goes.

Yes, but my baby is not in good spirits.  She's in pain and can't sleep.  So I know something is up, I'm just not getting a lot of answers from my pedi.

  • Could be teething. DS is 5 1/2 months and got his bottom 2 teeth a week before his 5 month birthday. He actually just pooped a weird stinky poop a 1/2 hour ago, is cranky, and gassy now. He's been drooling a lot lately. I think that he may be getting his top teeth soon.
