Babies: 0 - 3 Months

will he outgrow this?

DS will only nap if I'm holding him. He falls asleep while nursing and no matter where or when I try to put him down, he wakes up. Then I either have to nurse him again to get him back to sleep or deal with his crankiness. Will he outgrow this or is this a bad habit that we have to break? Any suggestions for breaking if this is a habit?

  • Have you tried using a pacifier?

He will outgrow it but in the meantime try wearing him in a baby carrier so you can get stuff done.

Thanks for the idea but I have 3 different baby carriers (Ergo, Belle, and a sling) and he cries in all 3. I haven't tried a Moby -- maybe I'll have to suck it up and buy one on the off chance that he'll like it.

  • My DS wouldn't ever let me put him down either. Then I discovered the SwaddleMe blanket. I could lay him down awake in that thing and he'd fall asleep and nap for an hour or more.  I wanted to kiss the inventor!!!  But now he's rolling onto his tummy and we're in a sleep sack.......and back to not being able to put him down. No
Run! Run to BRU and get some kind of swaddle blanket!

We've tried Avent and Soothie pacifiers. He won't take either Sad Would you suggest another brand?

  • Can you nurse him laying down and slowly back away and leave him laying there?

I completely agree with this . . . swaddling is like magic (at least for my LO).

We use the Nuk ones. We had one other kind (I can't remember) and she didn't like it.

Let me butt in here too!  ;)  MAM pacis!

I'll have to try these. We swaddle him at night but during the day he cries uncontrollably when I try to swaddle him. DH was just reading this post over my shoulder and he's upset that I'm making our child out to be a cry baby but I feel like I've tried everything and I'm losing my sanity.

  • Hi Mr Seethesmiles, we don't think your baby is a cry baby because he wants to be held.  :)  He's just a baby who likes his mama.  Hopefully some of these ideas work.

DS was like this.  Yes, he will outgrow it.  You aren't creating a bad habit right now.  DO what you need to do to get by.  I did a LOT of sitting on the couch with DS asleep in 1 arm and the laptop on the other side of me.  Or taking a nap with him on me.  It is annoying, but he will outgrow it.  In the meantime, just do what oyu need to do and keep trying to put him down every now and then. GL!

  • Thanks, ladies. I'm going to try taking him for walks more often, too. That has worked sometimes in the past. We live on a very busy road (no shoulder or sidewalk) so I have to drive him to downtown to walk but maybe it would be good for both of us to get out of the house. Too bad it's raining today or I would be out the door!

This is totally me! There is actually an indent in the couch where my butt has been parked for the last 5 weeks.

  • It took about 3 months for DS to become more independent and not need to be held 24/7.  He still won't sleep in the crib though at 5.5 months.  It will get better.
