Hi Ladies,
I am trying to make a list of everything I still need and had questions about a mobile. Are they necessary over the crib, how about over the diaper changing table? Do you have any recommendations for mobiles? Also, I have heard that some mobiles don't fit well on cribs, has that been your experience? TIA.
Re: Is a mobile over crib really necessary, also recommend your mobile
Had one for #1 but got rid of it at 5m when she could pull up. #2 does not have one and I am not sorry about it.
I've had a lot of difficulty finding a mobile to put on the crib that doesn't scratch it. I think we're going to try mounting it to the wall.
A mobile over the crib is nice, but I think one over the changing table would just get in the way.
One over the changing table is soo uncessecary.. I just talk to dd on the changing table.. she loves it there!
I have one for the crib.. Its a ladybug style, and its really cute, but the music lasts about 2 minutes or so. We just stopped turning the music on, and have a radio playing softly in the background.
If you get one, make sure the music lasts awhile
I think much like any other entertainment type baby item, it all depends on your child. My daughter LOVES her mobile (and anything hanging over her head for that matter). But how was I to know that before she was born? Most people take the 'register for it all' approach because you never know what's going to work. She loves that $40 mobile, but has little use for her $180 SweetPeace...go figure!
This is the one we have - it's awesome because the music/rotation lasts a long time, it's battery operated, and not crank-operated, it has 3 different music modes, the colors and patterns are eye-catching for a baby, eventually the mobile can be removed and the music box can be left for your child and I think the improved the design so it fits on most cribs, but I'm not 100% sure about this one:

A mobile is not necessary. My LO does LOVE her mobile though but the only time I use it is when I put her in her crib while I'm folding and putting her laundry away. But, some sort of crib toy is good for when they get around 4 months because they will entertain themselves if they wake up before you and you can get extra sleep. I just got the mobile that went with my bedding set so it actually looks really good as decoration as well.
A changing table is not necessary either and probably a waste of money if you get a specific changing table but I would recommend something you can use as a changing table. I don't actually have a specific changing table...my dad built a top for one of her dresses (hand me down dressers that I painted so the top matches really well) and it screws into the back of the dresser so when I'm done with the changing table it is a dresser again and didn't get messed up. We use the changing table for diaper changes and for after bathtime lotion rub down and she really feels comforted on her changing table. It is also a good idea to start off changing their diaper in their room so they get used to their room. My LO LOVES her room...she can be fussy and I bring her to her room and she calms down...it is a relaxing place for her because she knows it is her room. I also think by having her in her room so much helped her transition to her crib easier because we did that at about 3 weeks old and she had no problems at all with the transition.
I have the Tiny Love Symphony mobile and DS loves it. Very entertaining. Not soothing though, so it's for play time only. It gives me time to take a quick shower or do some quick light cleaning. Definitely not necessary, and they don't really get interested until around 2 months.
I have the Kids Line mobile that goes with our crib bedding. I don't think I would have bought it on my own (it was a shower gift) but I'm glad to have it. DS likes the music that it plays, and it plays for a longer period of time.
I don't use a mobile over the changing table. We're really not there THAT long at any given time. I prefer to talk to him and coo at him instead.

Same here. DS LOVES IT!!!.. when swaddled, it puts him to sleep and unswaddled, he can stare at it forever
We also have the precious planet mobile. At first I didn't want a mobile, but then realized that "baby crack" helps keep DS entertain for at least a little while. There are a number of things I like about it:
1) Options - you can have just sound, sound and mobile, or sound, mobile and lights all at once. I've used just the heartbeat sound on its own to calm DS down at nap times.
2) When he gets to the age where he can pull the mobile down, the mobile part detaches and the light show will project on the roof.
3) Its funny to watch DS under it at night. His little arms and legs reach up towards it - like the mothership is beaming him up.
As far as changing tables - I just talk to him while I am changing him. As he gets older - I'd probably just give him a rattle or toy to play with.
