Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Very nervous/ upset about putting DD in crib for the night

I am used to having her close where I can keep an eye on her at night, but the time has come when we need to get her into her crib.

I know millions of babies sleep in their own cribs in their own rooms, but I am filled with anxiety and worry about it. We have a regular monitor, and I'm not going to buy a video or angelcare. Anyone else in this situation? Any words of advice?

I am in your shoes, no advice, I haven't done it yet.  I am one paranoid mo-fo about people breaking in my house in the middle of the night and since my hubby is gone most nights, I don't think I'll be transitioning DD for awhile... OR I will just lock myself in her room and "camp out" :)

Try not to worry too much, your mommy senses will still be on high sensitivity.

DD is in her crib in the room next door.  We don't use the monitor at night; we just sleep with both doors opens and I can hear every little cry and it wakes me up.  But I can no longer hear her moving around or batting the mattress, so we're all sleeping better!

  • It'll be great!  Best sleep we all ever got was after our DC's went to their cribs.

This is what I was going to say! We moved DS at 3 months.

  • Trust me, unless her room is on the other side of the house you'll hear her noises and might not even need the monitor. She'll do great! This is coming from a woman whose daughter was in her room from the start, though. We did her in the bassinet in our room for less than a week and I got no sleep between her, my DH and the dog all snoring! :)

Someone once told me that the natural frequency of a baby's cry is biologically linked to their mother's brain. So that when they cry out, you'll hear it because your body is trained to do so. So rest easy knowing that if she's in distress, you'll know it! But if she's not, you'll get an amazing night of sleep! I'm sure it'll be tough the first week or so, but you'll be fine once you've all adjusted to it!

  • I can't suggest much because my suggestion would have been the video monitor -- my most favorite baby item -- and you don't want to get one.  I'm sure it will become less difficult with time: hang in there!
  • you could sidecar the crib for a while. You take out one siderail of the crib, push it flush against your bed, make sure both mattresses are the same level and stuff a rolled up towel in the crease. We are so not ready to let her sleep by herself, but I cannot sleep while she is in bed with me (she sleeps very well in bed with me).
  • the baby will be fine. DS has been sleeping in his crib since day one, and he's still alive! we don't have a monitor either. his room is right next door. i hear every little sound he makes. (somehow DH doesn't hear him though... hmmm... must be nice. lollll)
  • I have no advice, I'm fighting DH tooth and nail on this one. We live in an apartment and you have to walk through the living room and down another hall to get to DS's room. I think we'll put him in our room in the crib for a while. Then when it's time for him to go into his room, I'll sleep in his room for a bit, then move to the living room and then maybe someday back into my room.

  • It was hard. i was in there checking all the time the first couple of weeks. i still check a lot when I wake up. But we don't even need the monitor to hear her when the fan in our room is not on. And we all started sleeping so much better.
  • we let DD sleep in a bassinet in our room for less than 1 week..we didnt' sleep a wink when she was in our room..moved her to her crib and I slept great (even if it was only for 2 hours!)...I have amonitor and her room is next to ours...I wake up when she fusses/cries...
