I guess advice isn't really needed, but more of a WWYD. Ugg. I was supposed to return to work yesterday, as it was the end of my maternity leave. Because of my accident, I am in a lot of pain, and my right leg is injured, mainly the foot/heel (psa-flip flops offer no foot protection). The doctor wrote me a note saying until June 9 to be on modified activity for no more than 15 minutes an hour for a max of 5 hours a day. I have a 40 minute commute each way to work, plus dropping off at daycare, plus I don't just sit at my desk all day. I am physically in pain still, plus it is my right leg, so I have only actually driven once in two weeks, only about 1 mile to Target.
I was on the fence about returning to work PERIOD. My boss is OK with me still being out, but HR sounded rather annoyed. She basically said I should come back part time on Monday, and that any other boss would have fired me. She also said she could start charging me for my insurance, but as a favor to me she won't. She also said several times that most mom's don't return at all. I don't know if she thinks I am milking this for more leave or what?? There is NO way I could return to work, or commute with my foot, I can't even take a regular shower or wear anything but a croc on my foot. I was pretty shocked because I was only due to go back yesterday, it's not like its been weeks or months. Would you feel responsible to go back on Monday, or would you take until June 9 when the note from the doctor expired. I also don't know when I would notify them if I am quitting. Would you do it by Monday or by June 9 (if that is what I decide to do?)
Re: I have a major dilemma-need advice (long).
Are you not eligible for another stint of STD due to your accident? I don't know what all the rules are, but I would have thought that you could be covered by STD because of the extent of the injuries. Or is that not allowed b/c you just had STD with your pregnancy?
I would NOT feel obligated to return to work if I was in that much pain and unable to drive. A part-time schedule does not change your commute.

First of all, I don't know the structure of your company, but wouldn't your boss outrank HR lady? I wouldn't let her bully you into doing anything you weren't ready for. As long as your boss is fine with things, she can go jump. AT MOST, I would see if there was anything they wanted me to work on at home.
Whether you decide to go back or not is a whole different issue, I guess the best thing to do would be to tell them as soon as you were sure one way or another? But if you really don't know at this point, you just don't know. I would try to give them two weeks from whenever I made my decision.
GL, and I hope you're feeling better soon!
what a bitty!!! i would almost be tempted to send her a picture of your injuries and say something to the affect of you expect me to come to work after this?? (probably not the best suggestion but i would be seriously annoyed! heck i'm annoyed for you! lol)
obviously something like this would have put you out of work regardless if you were on mat. leave or not. if your boss is okay with it what do they have to be bitching about anyway?
do you feel comfortable mentioning anything to your boss about HR's reaction?
ECU- I used all my STD with maternity leave, and all my PTO. I was officially "unpaid" as of the 16th of May, but HR knew all that way before I went out on maternity leave and never mentioned me paying for benefits.
I think my boss would be fine with me coming back whenever, but the company itself wouldn't because I am not entitled to any more leave, or as she said, any more benefits. I think the other issue is they have a temp in place and she is doing well and the office dynamic has changed, it used to be that there was an "odd girl out" that had issues, but the temp they hired was her BFF and so now this girl is super happy at work. I just got the feeling like no one expected me to come back at all, but now all of a sudden they have to have me back ASAP. I just didn't like the vibe I got from HR at all. She said "you have a lot of people pulling for you" I have no idea what that means. Also, my office is a contracted part of the compnay, so we pay HR seperate, we don't really fall under all their rules/regulations, she knows nothing about my job. I just didn't like any of the conversation with her. I have been there for 4 years with excellend reviews and 7% raises each year, so I know I would be welcomed back, but this has sort of tipped the scales for me staying home. Ugg. I hate stuff like this.
