What to do about LO's constipation?

The first full month or so of cereal and purees he had no problems and went at least 3-4 times a day.  The last 1-2 weeks haven't been that good.  It is like every other day he doesn't poop and is miserable.  I am giving him a couple of ounces of water everyday and now mixing it with some apple juice to help.  Also only giving him apples or prunes for fruit.  Anything else I can/should be doing?   He was up a lot in the night and just seems uncomfortable (could also be teething stuff).  TIA.

we had a similar situation a few weeks back. pedi said to try some pear juice but it sounds like you re doing apple juice which i'm sure has the same effect. we switched from rice cereal to oatmel and the problem has pretty much resolved. we also cut out the sweet potato he was eating since that seemed to coincide with the whole constipation. he is having "lighter" veggies now and all is well. GL!

  • One tablespoon of karo syrupin his bottle is my 'last resort' when DS is too umcomfortable.
  • prune juice or pear juice.  If you mix it with water make it half & half.  I would give that to him 2 times a day for a few days to get his bowels moving at the normal pace again.

  • This might seem gross, but have you tried "helping" him go? If DD hasn't gone in a few days I put some vaseline on a q tip and put the tip in her rectum. It works every time. Prunes are a regular part of DDs diet and that seems to help a lot. We try to give her prunes every couple of days with her am oatmeal.

  • My DD had some major constipation a few weeks ago and the nurse at our ped's office recommended pears or 1 tbsp of table sugar in the bottle. The sugar sounds just horrible but it worked like a charm.
