no sew curtain hem ??

A question for crafty ladies. I bought corduroy panel drapes for the nursery, they only came in one length & are way too long. I have no sewing ability at all. I picked up that no sew tape that you "iron on" the hem with, has any used this? Would it work OK with this type of fabric or would you brign them somewhere to be hemmed? Thanks!

Re: no sew curtain hem ??

  • I used that a while back and it seemed to work pretty well. They also have the glue stuff you can use. just a suggestion... fold it and crease it with a hot iron where you want the hem to be. that way when you iron the tape on, it will be straight.

  • Corduroy might be too heavy for the tape...it generally doesn't work great on heavy fabric.

This is horribly tacky, but using heavy duty gluegun would work.  Or of course getting them hemmed somewhere!

  • I've never used it before. I feel like sewing is faster. One thing I would say to do though is make sure you measure your hem so it comes out even. I know it sounds like simple advice, but just never know.

I bought IKEA drapes like that--and it was a BAD idea.  Not only is it impossible to get it to look okay, but later, when you need to wash your drapes, it all comes apart again.  LOL, I just put them back up b/c the bed is in front of them and you can't tell!!  But I'll never do that again...

It might be cheap to get them hemmed--I'd call around to some chinese laundry shops!

  • Also... my advice would be to try it, if it doesn't work THEN take them somewhere. If it works you saved money Smile
  • THanks ladies! The drapes were $50 so I don't want to risk ruining them. If I brign them somewhere to get them hemmed how exactly do I measure? from the top down & tell them the length I want or do I try to mark or pin where I want. THey are actually up hanging right now so I will have to take them down & bring them somewhere.

  • It's okay on lighter weight fabric, but can come loose over time.To me, that stuff is so much more trouble to use than sewing.

My mom is a glue-gun fanatic. Anytime she's ever made curtains out of fabric- she gets her handy dandy glue gun out and glues the hems instead of sew. Its always held good too.

If they are nice curtains, though, I would see if I could find someone to hem them.

  • The IKEA stuff is crap compared to Stitch Witchery. I have used both and noticed a massive difference in the results. And yes both can come "undone" during washing/drying. The heat from hot water/the dryer can cause the glue to heat and therefore loosen. This is also how you remove the product (well applying heat using an iron) if you want to get rid of it.

I would try it and see if you like the look of the result. If you don't like it then measure your window from ceiling to floor and then from where you have the curtain rod placed to the floor. When you take them in to be hemmed they will ask you how you want your curtains to hang. If you want them to just touch the ground vs pool a bit it will alter how long them hem the curtains.
