Cramping/Spotting - ER or wait it out?

I had a couple drops of spotting yesterday, today it's a heavier bright red splotch when I wipe, but I would still put it under "spotting"...

except now I have moderate cramping, coming in slight waves.

Obviously I'm freaking out.

I KNOW spotting can be benign. But I have not had a DROP this pregnancy. No sub-hematomas or anything in the 2 u/s's I've had (most recent at 8 weeks) so I am so very worried.

I hate to spend the co-pay on an ER visit. Not to mention it's a holiday.

Go? Call in the morning?  Chillax, it's nothing?

thanks.

ps - I'm 11 weeks today

Re: Cramping/Spotting - ER or wait it out?

  • Hmmm...thats a tough call, but I would go to the ER just to make sure or call the doc...only because it is slightly 'heavier' today.  It will likely be nothing....but going will put your mind at ease.

  • I would panic and call OB or even RE .  They can make the call on the phone if they think it can wait till tomorrow.   My RE office always seems to be open.

I called RE last week for cramping and they were more then willing to pull my chart and give me advice.

  • Call the on call OB and see what he/ she would like you to do, but I would not ignore it.  Hope it is nothing.

  • I would probably wait it out. ?I went to the ER with my first m/c (I've had 3) and it was such a horrible experience, I vowed never to do it again (the waiting, no empathy from the ER docs, no real answers). ?

I would call first thing in the am and see if they can get you in as quick as possible.?

Good luck. ?I'll be thinking of you.?

  • I should have put I would panic but that doesn't mean you should.

I panic over everything as you can see I called for cramping.

    Hope everything is ok!!

  • I'd go in. Especially since the spotting has gotten worse and the addition of cramping. I hope everything is okay. Keep us posted!
It took over four years to be diagnosed with PCOS. We TTC #1 for 18 months, did 5 rounds of Clomid and finally moved onto IVF...which worked! Throughout our IF journey, we suffered 3 miscarriages. We conceived both DD and DS without treatment.

  • Ugh that sucks.  I would go in just to be sure.  How long of a wait is it usually at the ER you go to?

Definitely call your OB - they must have an on-call doc over the holiday. If you can't reach him/her, the I might consider going to the ER.

Have you done any activities that might have caused the spotting (sex or just physical exertion?)

GL - I went to the ER at 6 weeks and I was so happy that I did.  The again, the bill hasn't come yet...

I agree... There really isn't much an ER would do. You would get some bloodwork probably a catheter and an ultrasound. They might not even get answers for you. I also did not have the nicest most compassionate doctors either. I would call your OB but they will probably tell you that if the cramping gets beyond anything you can control with laying down, a tylenol and lots of water and if the spotting fills a pad more than once an hour to go in. Hugs!!! I hope it's nothing!!!!

  • so I need to be using/filling a pad to really need to worry? I'm just spotting. As much as I love to exagerate that, it's just spotting.

I guess the only thing that's crossing my mind is a missed m/c. I have not really done anything to bring this on, light gardening yesterday, but really took it easy.

I don't think I'm going to go to the ER. But i'll call so I get in earlier in the AM. (OB)

Thanks a ton for your ideas and thoughts. I'm quite grateful to have you guys. Just sayin'  ;-)

I think that's a fine choice - can you take it easy this weekend and keep you feet up/ drink a bunch of water? That seems to be the answer to all things spotting.

Also my 2 miscarriages... I had WAY different cramping. I remember my first one I was so crampy I went to the bathroom to pee because I was hoping that it would relieve some of the pain. It was like a tearing instead of a pinching.  The second one I had to leave work because the pain was so bad. I was in tears and had trouble breathing through them. But... that doesn't mean that everyone would have the same thing as me. But the point of this- I could tell something was different in regards to my cramps. So try to judge it that way too. I would get in to the doctor earlier tomorrow and take it easy today. Easier said than done but spotting is almost normal- gushing blood is not.

  • @Skims: thanks, hon.

Davez just came over to me lying on the couch with half a glass of wine. He said I need to relax, NOW. lol.

I had a couple sips. what a cheap date am I... those sips did the trick. for a few. And I gave half of it back to him. When the hell have I EVER turned down a drink? Dear Sweet Harvey... just behave for momma. ;-)

  • Is there an urgent care near you? ?If so call and find out if they have u/s on site. ?It's usually a smaller wait time, lower co-pay, and just easier all the way around.

?A question.... ?TMI warning .... are you constipated? ?Are you 100% sure this is vaginal bleeding?

My standard logic is that there's nothing that can be done regardless of what's causing it but my peace of mind is worth quite a bit. ?The fear and stress sucks so the bottom line is how much is it worth to you to have some reassurance?

And I will echo Skims - my m/c was pretty tough pain wise. ?I did have trouble breathing thru the cramps/contrax when it actually passed. ?There was no mistaking it.?

    ?

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • Howleyshell does have a good idea... That isn't a bad idea to find out if they have an u/s machine.

ok here is another question... tmi. Did you shave down there today? Are you sure you didn't knick yourself? I did that when I was pregnant with Charlie and I was freaking out- blood on the tp. Then after kinda a while I figured it out. I stopped trying to hard to keep it clean down there!

  • Shell... I laugh b/c there was a time with Ava where I was HYSTERICAL b/c of "spotting" and yes, it was from my bum. "Know your source" is ALWAYS the phrase on my mind prior to a freak out ;-)

I might check into that Urgent Care idea. Didn't know some have u/s.

I just checked the ol' TP a few mins ago, and nothing. A drop of dried/brown, but nothing. The cramps are still pretty bad, but that can be somewhat self-induced from stress, at least in my world.

I'm going to go see if a brownie and ice cream will help. lol.

  • You've got a GREAT attitude:

    ?

    booze and chocholate first.

    ?

Those 2 things can go a long way in my world.

    ?

Hope you get some answers and peace of mind soon.

    ?

And thanks again for all your audio/video help! ?You rock.?

  • no Skims, I did NOT cut my peekachoo today. Or yesterday. And I have NO intention of going near it anytime tomorrow, either. Next week isn't looking good as well.  ;-)

Especially since I'm high as hell on chocolate and 2 sips of wine ;-)

I'm going to try to wait until the AM. Any spotting/cramps then, I'm in their face until my hoohah gets the vagcam.

Good luck, I hope everything is okay!
  • i hope all is well.  i had red spotting at 11w4d and all was fine.  i did take off work and rested
  • I know you've gotten good advice here, but to add to the above: pound water!!! I had 3 bouts of spotting in the 1st tri.  Every time I was told to put my feet up and drink as much water as possible.  I have no idea what their logic was, but it stopped it every time.  GL!!!!!
  • I have no advice but wanted you to know i am thinking of ya! I think your decision was the right one. Wait to go to the ER unless you have to. Keep us posted!
