What are some good questions to ask potential in-home daycares?

Looking for ideas of questions I should be asking during the initial contact. Thanks.??

Re: What are some good questions to ask potential in-home daycares?

  • will any felonious activity be taking place on the premises?

do you have any "funny" relatives who may stop by?

    may I see your certification?

I'd ask for parent refs...is that normal? I have never used daycare that isn't at the gym. I didn't even investigate them- I poked my head in and said yup! This'll work!

  • Are they licensed?

    What are their hours?

What's the policy on early drop off/late pick up if necessary?

What is the sick policy, both for them canceling and for you keeping a child home?  Do they have backup care available for you to use if they are sick?

How many paid vacation days do they get per year?  Will they set the date or work around your schedule?

How  many children do they watch and what ages?

How many adults working (if there are many children)?

What kinds of activities do they do with the children?

What are you required to provide (diapers, wipes, food, nothing?)?

  • We use an in home daycare and we love her but we are switching to a center after the next few weeks, I'm off for the summer and in the fall my son will be at a center.

Reasons and questions you could ask:

How much TV is watched in the house?  (whenever I picked up, the kitchen tv was on to Dr. Phil or whatever but also DS knew characters from shows that we don't watch at home so I have to assume a TV is on more than she said or I thought).

Will you be transporting the kids anywhere?
We signed a contract that said that she is allowed small, local trips with the kids.  I didn't realize this included DAILY trips to drop off school-age kids in her care to their neighborhood elementary.  Not a big deal but in the winter she was bundling each kid up and loading them up.  We had sooo many below zero days that it did concern me.  But what to do in our situation?   We waited it out and knew we'd switch him.

Maybe I should have confronted her more on these issues but I didn't.
