Is it acceptable to wear dress pants to a wedding.

This wedding is really fancy. Infact the place the reception is held is at a restaurant where the only way you can get in is if you are wearing a suit etc.

And like most of you ladies, I have humongous cankles, my husband actually calls them "thankles." sigh*

Before the "`thankles" I always had pretty horrible legs and feet.

So now especially I don't want to wear a dress. Do you think it would be acceptable to wear dress pants and a fancy top to this sort of wedding?

  • i personally would not, but at 8-9 months pregnant i doubt anyone will hold it against you- do what makes you comfortable

  • As long as the top and the pants were both fancy, then yes...I'd say it's fine.  If you can, I'd try to find a floor length gown.  Is this black tie or just fancy?  Black tie I would strongly suggest a gown...
  • Not sure what kind of dress pants you mean, but i am imagining something really "fancy" and i think that would be okay. But if you mean just plain black ones with a nice top no, the top would have to be really dressy. If this makes any sense at all. Basically my point is...it depends on the outfit. I think some would be okay. Especially pregnant.
  • Could you wear a long dress?  I've seen some really pretty, flowy formal ones that look like they would be comfortable and not show any leg.

  • I would for sure.  You can make dress pants and a dress shirt look better and fancier than a dress.  Especially if you have cutie pie swollen legs/feet that are super white like mine!  IMO you have to look good in what you wear ya know?  That's part of dressing nice.

  • As pp said, depends on the type of pant. They make some very fancy palazzo pants-which are very blousy and can look like a skirt when you move. Some of them have a sheer overlay which make them look very fancy. Pair those with a really nice top and I think you'd be okay.

  • It depends on the dressyness (not sure if that is the right word) of the pants,

Khaki?s would be an obvious no

Something like this might be an option:

but what about a long dress:

Good Luck, I feel you pain DH is in a wedding 6 weeks after the baby is due, I am hoping to be at least out of my maternity clothes and just in a bigger size by then.

  • I wore dress pants and a nice elegant top to a wedding recently and everyone said I looked really nice.  I couldn't find a dress that I liked so I decided to wear dress pants.  Nothing's wrong with that.

I agree.  What about a pair of really wide leg pants?  Pre-pg I had events that I have to attend that were fancy, but I was working and had to be pretty mobile.  I have several pairs of wide leg pants with layers of gauzy type material over them and no one could tell I had on pants (but I could still move easily and bend and squat to do all my behind the scene things)

  • Have you tried a floor length gown.  I got one at destination maternity for $40.  It hides the cankles and possibly will hide flip flops.
  • I would wear whatever is comfortable to you. And, I'd likely kill anyone who said the first word about what I was wearing this far along.
  • What about a long dress?? If you don't have one/can't find one/or don't want to put the money out for a maternity dress now...I would say wear the pants...who cares?? I would just wear a really nice top and accessorize to dress it up.  It'll be fine,....you're preggo.  I wore dress pants to my friends wedding back in February and it seemed like everyone else was wearing a dress, but she didn't care that I wasn't.

Depends if it's black tie or not.  If it's black tie then I'd probably lean towards a floor length gown or dress.

But if it's just fancy then yes, definitely wear pants (especially if it would mena not having to buy another outfit)

  • At my wedding (probably pretty similar to yours - private club, requires a jacket / tie to get in), the best man's wife did this (wore black "dress" pants and a top - not a matching / coordinating outfit - just 2 separates) and I was sort of annoyed.  Granted, she had just given birth about 6 weeks before, but really - you can't find a stretchy / long / flowy dress to wear?  We had the bridal party at our table with their spouses, so there she is in all of the head table pics wearing her JC Penny separates.

  • Do you know if the restaurant has a dress code for woman? I use to work at Churchill Downs (the race track) the have a restaurant called the Turf Club. There dress code men must a suite and ladies couldn't wear pants. People would rent ti for wedding receptions. I can't count th number of time woman would leaver upset because they weren't albe to get in with pants on. One time it was the brides mother. She had to leave and go change. Call the restauraunt to make sure. If they a dress code for women trust me when I say they aren't going to care that your pregnant. If they say panmts are ok then rock the dress pants.
