3rd Trimester

is your carseat in the middle or passenger side

of the back seat?

i am going to try installing ours (before inspection) and don't want to go through the whole process just to try to move it.  Googling tells me both-  I see the advantage to the middle being away from side impact, but the side being easier to get the kid in and out

Re: is your carseat in the middle or passenger side

  • Passenger side because the middle of my backseat has a hump to it and the carseat base is wider than the hump so it doesn't sit still on it. In BF's car we're discussing the middle but I think we're going to go with the passenger side as well because his back seat is bigger and it's hard to get to the baby in the middle.

  • It will be on the passenger. I don't have a middle seat.
  • Ours is actually behind the driver's side, because the middle has a hump, like PP mentioned. Our logic is that for long trips, DH will be driving, so I'll be able to reach back to take care of any fussiness. (Or to peel our boxer off of the car seat- she's a chronic snuggler.)
  • For safety, you should put the carseat in the middle unless your car's user manual says not to or it doesn't fit. I would imagine that the inspector will correct you if it's on the side.

  • I read that the middle is the best place, but like somone else said, I have a hump there and I don't think it will sit very well there.  And I don't have a headrest to put the mirror on in the middle and I would like to be able to see my LO when I am driving.  It drove me crazy when I couldn't my niece the few times we took her out.

I am debating between driver's side and passenger's side.  If I put him on the passenger's side I will be able to reach back to him when I am driving, but really I shouldn't be doing that anyway.  And if I put him on the driver's side, when DH and I are together the passenger would be able to reach him easier and when I am driving, he will be on my side, so I won't have to walk ALL the way around the car to get him in and out.

  •  Mine is going on the drivers side. Yes, the middle and passenger are a little safer but I have other kids and someone has to sit on the dirvers side. If the baby was on the other side it would make too hard for the other kids to get in the car without me having to move the seat every time because of how the seats are layed out in my van.

  • We are putting it in the middle
  • Middle for now but with #2 coming we may have to put one on passenger and one on driver side.

  • mines in the middle. There is a list you can find online that has every type of car, and the safest place for the carseat to go in each car. i forgot where i found it but you can probably just google it
  • Passenger side.  I decided it would be too much effort to try and put the car seat in the middle.  Too much leaning over and bending.

  • In my DH's car it is in the middle, but in my car it is on the passenger side because the middle buckle just won't tighten enough to safely install it there.
  • middle is usually safest

Baby is on the drivers side. DD's seat is on passenger side

  • I'm going to try for the middle, but I drive a big suv and am worried that I'll have a hard time hauling her in and out from there.

  • Passenger side of both cars.  We have LATCH in both of our cars, but only behind the passenger and drivers seats.  Our owners manuals say NOT to put it in the middle - using the two interior anchors isn't safe.  Make sure you read your owners manual for specific car details.

FYI - We have "newer" cars too 2007 Toyota Camry and 2005 Honda Accord.

  • My car has bucket seats in the back so middle is not an option.  In the truck I don't think we can get it in the middle as it is to far to reach.  I didn't think of these things when I bought my car just that the cars where big enough to get a seat in.
