My FS is 22 months. He needs tubes in his ears but cannot get in with ENT for several months. We will be getting a referral for EI soon.
He has a HUGE receptive vocabulary, but his expressive language is lacking. Many of his words sound like gibberish, but are consistently used as the proper word for something. For example: "bah" for mop, cheesh for treat. He also frequently mishears words. He hears helicopter when I say doctor and hears sneeze when we say scream. I have taught him sign so he is able to communicate without getting frustrated. If he doesn't know the sign, he has started to make up his own.
Is there anything I can do to help him. I am careful to say words clearly, talk and read to him a lot, and ask him to say words. I'm just wondering if there is anything else I can do while we wait for services and the appt. TIA!
Re: Any speech therapists??
Hi, I'm a speech pathologist. What you are doing already is great! Another sugggestion I have is that if the word you are saying is a small object that you can hold close to your face/mouth when you say the word can help him associate the object with how you say it. For example, if you want him to hear and say 'apple,' hold the apple near your mouth while you say it so he can see your mouth and the object at the same time.
I would also praise him or let him know you understand him when he is using made up signs or his gibberish words. As long as he is consistent with them, to him they have meaning and you want to make him know that he is understood at least by you. Then you can repeat the word but in the correct way. So if he says 'bah' and you know he means mop, say 'Yes! That's the mop!'
Good luck!!!
