3rd Trimester

S/O washing baby's clothes beforehand...

If you don't already use a dye- and/or perfume-free detergent for your own clothes, will you start? I've washed the LO's clothes but I also figure that the baby will be snuggling up to us tons as well, and we'll be wearing clothes that were washed in regular detergent. Or is that overkill, since our clothes won't be surrounding the baby the way his/her clothes will?

Re: S/O washing baby's clothes beforehand...

  • i already washed all of our stuff in all free & clear...so i've just kept using that for baby's stuff as well. i used to use dryer sheets on our clothes though, and have now stopped.  instead i put some white vinegar in one of those fabric softener balls and throw that in with the wash...no need for dryer sheets anymore and much better for baby!

  • Yes, we've switched to Crunchy Clean for all our laundry.  It's just easier that way.  Some of these types of detergents don't recommend switching back and forth because of the "residue" that can be left behind - ditto for dryer sheets, we've stopped using those completely, too.  Maybe it's overkill, but like I said it just makes it less complicated.
  • Ever since I first got pregnant, I've had some itchiness down there from time to time (had to switch showering soaps too), so we've switched for that reason alone...and will continue for baby.  Plus, I've heard it's better for your clothes.
  • I've used the dye free perfume free detergent for DS when he was a baby but I think I've always used dryer shets....maybe I shouldn't be using them this time?!!  What about static?! That was a good question!  I do think we'll end up switching all detergent over for at least a few months.  I think I washed DS's clothes in the special detergent for at least 9 months then switched over to the smell good kind!  I love the smell of clean clothes!

Check into Dryer Balls- I used them for the first time when prewashing the LO's clothes last weekend, and they worked like a charm- no static. They are rubber, a little bit bigger than golf balls with nubbly spikes all over them. ?

  • Bounce makes a fragrance-free and dye-free dryer sheet. We have been using them since finding them as I can't use products with dyes or fragrance. I have eczema and plan on using the same stuff I use on my clothes as I will on the baby's.

  • I washed the baby's clothes in Dreft but I'm still using Tide for me.  I had not really considered washing my clothes in Dreft, too.
  • I initially used separate but it's SO much easier just having one kind.  I Purchase whatever free and clear is cheapest at the time for DD's clothes, diapers and our clothes and linens.

  • All Free and Clear is close enough in price to the regular dye and perfumed detergent we usually buy.  So, we're washing all of our clothes with the same detergent.

We already wash our clothes in a free and clear detergent, so we'll continue to use that for everyone's clothes including baby.

Dreft is soooo expensive and not really a requirement for baby, especially for you to start using it on your own clothes...have you thought about Free & Clear detergents for both you and baby?
