What does this sound like?

I haven't been too worried and chalked a lot of this up to
"every baby is different" but after Cooker's post about Miles eating issues and a couple posts I've seen on 0-6, I'm starting to feel like my 9 week old may have some feeding/reflux issue, but perhaps just a mild case?  Does this sound like anything to you?

DS has been a pretty inefficient eater from day one--the lactation consultant had us using a special supplementer to correct his latch.  Feedings were taking 60-90 minutes and were 2 hours from start to start around the clock.  It went on this way until about 5 weeks, when I switched to formula because BF was taking it's toll on every member of our family.  Now DS drinks from a bottle and even though he is 9 weeks old (and has close to doubled his birthweight) he still only drinks just 2 ounces at a time and feeds every two hours around the clock.

Also, DS has what I thought was a cold for at least three weeks, maybe closer to four.  The cold never seems to really develop into anything but it hasn't gone away, either.  It sounds like a phlegmy nose and throat-kind of like a rattle.  It just occurred to me that it seems to be worse at night just after a feeding, when I lay DS back down to sleep.  I've kept DS at an incline for the past 4 nights and it seems to be better.  I'm wondering if maybe some acid is backing up into DS's sinus cavity and is causing the congestion?

DS does not seem to be in any distress or pain at all, so I just can't figure out if this is just a cold that is hanging on or if it mught be some mild reflux?  (Sleeping on an incline would help a cold, too, right?

Re: What does this sound like?

  • Honestly it sounds just like DD when she was a baby. I would chalk it up to every baby is different and let it be if he is gaining weight and not in pain.

  • All the babies I've known with reflux have also had pain/fussiness.  I think your DS is probably fine but it never hurts to ask the pedi.
