3rd Trimester

Clicky Poll: Are you/Did you have a "Boutique" 3D/4D Ultrasound

I didn't make this term up- this is what our OB Practice called it.  Are you having a non-medically necessary ultrasound to "meet"/"see" your little one before they are born?[Poll]

  • My OB does a 3D u/s of LO's face at the big u/s.

  • nope, my doctor doesn't recommend those 3D/4D ultrasounds, not safe/good for baby... and I really didn't want one anyway... I want at least his little face to be a surprise Smile
  • I go on May 30th! Can't wait!!!!!
  • We are going tomorrow for ours.  I think DH is more excited than me. LOL

    Me: 36  DH: 37

    Due date Aug 3, 2019
  • I have one scheduled in a few weeks.  I just want it for memories.  My OB doesn't do 3D/4D at all.
  • Totally worth the money, we went last week. It was nice to have such an early keepsake (something that our parents didn't have with us) plus we have it all on video, it's pretty amazing to watch.

  • I think the 3D?ultrasounds?look freaky. I have no want whatsoever to do one :)
  • That is a ton of ultrasound with a distinct uncertainty about the impact on a fetus (DH is a radiologist). When we went for our U/S I asked about it - they don't do them unless there is a reason to believe that there is a facial abnormality. At that there are a handful of people who are good at (read: fast) and are trusted to do this imaging.

not to jump boards (actually, okay, yes to jump boards), but why does he/she say it's bad for the baby?

The risks to a fetus from ultrasound are unknown (not the sort of thing you can ethically test).  The APA recommends against all not medically necessary ultrasounds.

They don't know exactly what, if any, harm ultrasound can cause a fetus.  (From what I recall, an ultrasound uses sound waves and they don't know if those sound waves could affect the ears or any other part of the developing body.)  To be cautious, it's better to forego extra ultrasounds.

Although, there are women who, for medical reasons, have an ultrasound at each appointment.  Surely that would be a lot more exposure than a single boutique 3D ultrasound.

Which is what I always said...and then my parents told me they were planning a visit. I casually mentioned the idea to my mom and she freaked with excitement. So I had one, and now have a CD full of my alien baby....

  • I haven't had it done, but if we had an extra $100 to throw around I might.  I'm super nervous about the gender guess!

Not to be contrary, but I have been told that 3D/4D is exponentially more exposure. Apparently, hearing damage is one risk.

  • DH thinks they're creepy, so he left it up to me. I had considered it, but in the end it wasn't really worth the $80, since there's no guarantee he'd even cooperate to get a cute picture (he's been a very stubborn kid with pics this pregnancy). I didn't need an overpriced picture of his elbow or foot.?

  • I really have no desire. Since we already know what he is...I guess I'd like what he looks like to be a surprise. And I'd like to hold on to the dream that he'll look at least a LITTLE like me until the end of pregnancy Smile

  • I had one only because I was supposed to get one when I had my big u/s. However, I ended up having to go to another place, that didn't do them, due to my insurance. (I work at a competing hospital) I will probably get another one in a few weeks.
