nursery setup HELP- what are you putting in Drawers??

we have the closet and between the dresser and changing table we have 9 drawers.

I am trying to figure out the best way to set everything up

I figure changing table can be

1 drawer- diaper supplies for restocking the baskets that sit above the drawer but below the changer

1 drawer- sheets and such for crib, PNP, bassinet,

1 drawer- towels and washcloths

Then for the dresser I am debating doing a drawer of supplies-  are you keeping things like the grooming kit, relief kit, safety kit in the bedroom? i almost feel like that would be easier than the bathroom?

one drawer with bins for randoms & accessories with bins-  socks, hats, bibs, mittens, etc

a drawer each for onesies, sleepers/one piece outfits you wouldn't hang, and blankets/swaddles.

SO that covers 5/6 drawers- but in my head I can't imagine they will ever really be full, and I wonder what I am missing that needs to get put away

Anyone set this up- how did you do it? am i missing a 'drawer' category?

thanks!!

Re: nursery setup HELP- what are you putting in Drawers??

  • Okay I'm laughing at this... the reason being is that I'm in the process of designing a huge custom kitchen and I met with the client earlier in the week to go through drawer by drawer, what was going to live where and assign a task to each drawer and make decisions on which shelves in cabinets would slide out like a drawer etc.

So I'm envisioning the same sort of schematics for your dressing room with crazy notations here and there with itemized clothing and laundering details in the margins.?

  • I hung most of his little outfts in size order from 0-3 all the way up to 18 months.  Then I took his sleep sacks and put them all in a stack in the closet.  I also put a stack with burp cloths.  I put his "everyday" 0-3 onesies in a little basket in the closet.  The second basket in the closet I put bibs.  The third basket I put miscellaneous things that didn't fit anywhere.  I put a large basket under the changing table with all the changing supplies and diapers.  The one drawer in the changing table I put miscellaneous things.  I stored all his bath stuff in the bathtub which we are keeping in the closet.  We don't have a dresser, but an armoire with 4 small drawers.  One drawer I put 0-3 size socks and the other I put all the bigger socks.  The other drawers are still empty.  I put the spare bassinette sheets, sheet savers, and toys in the armoire.  I also stocked an armoire on our main level with a little basket that has diapers, changing supplies, burp clothes, and two spare outfits if he makes a mess.

i know-  i am crazy, and overthinking (reading about burp cloths and toys in the other reply to this post has now thrown my brain through another loop of 'what ifs?' about placement), but I want to get organized LOL

  • I am doing it a little differently.  I am splitting my clothes up by age and putting them in the dresser (1 drawer for 0-3 month, etc.) and using one drawer of the dresser for sheets and extra mattress covers.  At my changing table  (which is  actually a PB bar so it only has small drawers and a cabinet and room for baskets, I am going to keep one basket stocked with onesies/and other outfits so they are within arms reach when changing.

I am also keeping a basket on top of the dresser for hats, booties, and mittens, but I guess if I had extra drawers I would use some type of organizer and keep them in there.

I am keeping all of the first aid items and other supplies in the chaging table and keeping bath items in the bathroom....I am going to work on organizing my linen closet this weekend so I can keep her towels and washcloths (I seriously think she has at least 7-8 towels and like 20 w.c already) in a special basket just for her stuff.

One day you will think back to this line and laugh!

We also have a nine drawer dresser and I have to go through everything every couple of months to make room for all his stuff!  I would suggest keeping a drawer or two empty so that you have the overflow space and don't have to reorganize your system---which sounds great by the way!  I would definitely advise you to put all the health and medical supplies in the baby's room---that's where you're gonna use it, so that's where it needs to be (until baby is able to get into the drawers).  My only other suggestion is to designate a drawer for the nicer "everyday" clothes versus the ones you'll put baby in when you're just going to be around the house.  (This is more for Daddy's benefit...if he decides to try to be helpful!

I was actually going to post this same question.  Maybe 0-6 has good suggestions.  I would think that they have the experience to know what should go where.

I have a post it pad that I will plan on using to label each drawer to help me organize.  I'm postponing it until after the showers to see how much stuff I get.

My long dresser is also my changing table, so I plan on putting changing supplies in the top 2 drawers.  Next two will be whatever we use the most in the first few months--maybe onesies and sleepers.  Next two will be ??

I have a tall 5 drawer dresser as well.  It will depend on how much stuff we get, but the bibs and blanketswill go in one, socks and ?? in another, outfits in another...

I am seperating the clothes by size so that nothing gets mixed up.  Not sure how it's all going to work but I'll figure it out!

  • I agree to keep medical stuff in the room.  Much easier than in the bathroom.  Also, a few empty drawers isn't bad.  I have found that I began to need more drawer space as DD's clothing got bigger. It was easier to rearrange things having empty drawers to move into.

Oh wow, I have been thinking the same things lately.  I keep finding myself standing in the baby's room looking at the dresser (that has 6 drawers) and the closet and wondering what should go where.

I'm thinking of putting her towels and medicine in the linen closet.

One drawer will be diapers and wipes and lotions and those type of things

Right now I have all of her clothes hanging in her closet but will probably move some things like onesies, sleep sacks etc. in a drawer.

Socks and hats will be in a small drawer

Shoes in a basket in the closet

Basket of bibs - but I'll probably make room for some of these in the kitchen too.

It is so much to think about lol!!

  • I am a total organizer as well so I can relate!  Here is how I have my nursery set up.

Dresser/Changer Combo: Top drawer has wipes, diaper creme and other supplies for changing.  Middle Drawer has hats, bonnets and mittens, bottom drawer is divided with three baskets, 1 basket of socks, 1 basket of bloomers and 1 basket of shoes.

Armoire: Top drawer has four baskets, 1 basket of burp rags, 1 basket of towels and washclothes, 1 basket of receiving blankets and 1 basket sleep sacks and swaddlers.  Bottom drawer is filled with blankets.  In the top of the armoire I have 4 large bins.  2 bins full of toys, rattles, teethers, etc., 1 bin full of pajamas, 1 bin full of onsies.

Closet: I hung all of LO's outfits ranging by size.  I also have 1 basket of nursing supplies and 1 basket of misc items like wraps and slings.  The rest of the closet is full of extra cases of diapers.
