We've been putting off getting gates, but now DS takes off for the stairs so fast that we have to do it.
We have 3 cats, including one older cat that couldn't jump a gate. I'm assuming even the younger cats would have a hard time jumping a gate at the top of the stairs.
What do we do -- do they make gates with cat doors? Do we mount them above the ground a bit so the cats can crawl underneath?
Re: Gates and cats?
I wouldn't mount the gates higher. Not safe.
If the cats can't by the gate, they'll have to stay on that floor.
DMoney will be a kickass big sister
I wonder the same thing!!!!! We have the same issue. I guess you could do it above ground a bit--but then would DC fit under there??? I have a super fat cat, so it would have to be a lot of room.

I looked this up, and many people say they have just mounted the gate a little higher for the cats to creep under. Then you have to look for the right type of gate that can be installed at any height so you know it's secure and not a tripping hazard. And, make sure the gap at the bottom is not something that the baby can get their head stuck in. Lucky for me, I have a child with a gigantic head. I cannot vouch for the safety, but this is apparently what many people do.
The do make gates with cat doors, BUT those are for DOGS, not babies. If a cat can get through a little door, my baby can shove her head through it. So probably not a good idea.
They do make them with pet doors..Here is one I found:

Yes, but this is for keeping dogs out of a room, and probably larger children. Not babies...you can see in that picture a baby could probably get a fair amount of their body through that hole.
They have this exact gate minus the cat door, at C's old daycare.
I didn't think the slats were too wide, and no kids ever got their head stuck.
