Going Crib shopping!

My best friend's baby is 2 mo. old, so she wants to go crib shopping today!  So far, their little girl is in a bassinet, but she's already getting big for that.

Not quite ready to commit to something myself, but should be good for a few ideas.

Anyone want to share their thoughts on a good crib?  I think we're going to BRU and JCP because they have lots of floor models.   I'm thinking a 4-in-1 convertable type would be best.

Re: Going Crib shopping!

  • I started to buy a bassinet, but then I saw the 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 combos and said heeeyyy wait a minute...that's not a bad idea.  I finally went with the Chicco lluyaby 3-in-1 bassinet, changing table and playard.  We were in the store for more than 2hrs before we made our final decision.  It's tough because you want to make sure you make the right decision.  Maybe your friend would consider giving/lending you her bassinet now that her little one has outgrown it.

As far as cribs go, my mom is getting our crib from BRU and it turns into a bed.

  • (Shhhhh... that's my secret plan!   She hasn't offered it yet!  But she's pretty much a germ-o-phobe, so that may not happen.)

But I'd still need a crib anyway.  Not really doing a whole BABY ROOM thing, since our house is kind of small and the kid certainly doesn't need special cutesy curtains and fancy decor and crap.. at least for a while.

I also don't want to give up my guest room bed.   So the crib will just sort of occupy a corner of our guest room for the time being.  When we finish the basement in a few years (and save up the money!) our guest room will move down there.   But for now.. visiting grandma's gonna have to bunk in the baby's room and baby will sleep in the pack-n-play for a few days, when needed.

  • DH and I just put our DaVinci Kalani crib together last weekend (see a few posts down).  It's a really sturdy crib and turns into a daybed and then into a full size bed afterwards.  It's beautiful to look at.  Good luck and have fun!  :o)

  • Have fun! Hopefully she'll be willing to lend you her basinette. We settled on a pack and play for our room that will then move to our cabin - although DH thinks it should be Little One's full-time bed, but I'm not so sure; I'd rather he be in a crib. DD is still in her crib, and since they'll be sharing a room I don't want to move her b/c I don't want to worry about her getting out of bed and trying to cover him up or give him books during the night.
  • Busy.. .the Kalani is the exact one I've been eyeing.

    Is it really sturdy?

Hubby's theory on those 4-in-1s is that they won't hold up so well over time.  He's also balking at the $300+ pricetag.. but he's frugal that way! :)

My friend uses a pack-n-play for naps in the living room and she says it does move around/swing/jiggle when the baby moves, so her little one tends to wake up more in it, compared to her bassinet.  Just not quite as restful as something sturdier.  But we'll probably get one for downstairs anyway.
