Since names are a popular topic today...
Is anyone else going to name their children based on family traditions or cultural norms?
Names for either a boy or girl are already set for us (I agreed to it) based on how children are traditionally named in DH's Greek culture. The first child of either gender is named after the paternal grandparent (first name) and the parent (middle name).
Re: Naming by culture/family tradition?
I like that Jen. i think its a great tradition.
We arnt going by any paticular traditon but if its a girl we are naming her after my great grandmother.
I think the traditional and cultural names are a great idea.
My DH and I are choosing to not carry on the name that he was given that is his father's name as well... I don't like the whole "junior" thing or Charles III....
My side doesnt have any culture/traditions. In DH's family the son is given the father's first name as a middle name. My FIL's first name is Robert. DH's is Jeffery Robert. So if we have a son it will First Name Jeffery. No set traditions for girls
With our first son there was a tradition with first son's having the same middle name. So it went from DH's great great grandpa to great grandpa to grandpa to dad to josh to son Alek now for the same middle name. (glenn)
With the next child, if it is a boy we will be having my dad's first name as his middle name to honor him. And if it is a girl, I would love to incorporate my grandmothers name somehow but, Betty has been giving us some problems-
No, DH has a family name and if we have a son we wont be carrying on the tradition. I would be fine with it if DH wanted to, but as he put it "that is one tradition that needs to be broken"
Dh's Dad and grandfather were not good fathers. actually they were down right crappy. Dh wants to name a son after my Dad instead....I'm perfeclty ok with that, but am a little worried what his Dad will say!
If we have a boy, we'll need a B name because DH's family initials (him, his dad, his great uncle) have BCT. Middle name will probably be Charles (DH and FIL both have this middle name), but B names are hard! Especially when the favorite is Brandon and that's my DH's name! lol
If we have a girl, we don't really have any family traditions for naming ... but I might pass along my middle name if it fits well.
