Trying to Get Pregnant

IHO Rogue's Asian baby

Rogue, your dream was priceless!

My mom's sister is married to a Korean-American.  When she had my cousins a lot of people thought she adopted them from China; she once offered to show someone her c-section scar in the grocery store to prove otherwise!

Anywho, as you can see in my siggy pic DH is Indian, a.k.a. South Asian.  In Europe, when you say Asian people basically assume that you mean India/Pakistan/Sri Lanka but here in the US it does not seem to be the case.

FWIW we've thought about adopting a baby from India; there are so many beautiful little girls there who were abandoned (often literally on the side of the road just after birth) just because they are female.  However, adoption is very expensive & we are lucky enough to have good IF coverage so this would be in the future.

Anyways, I'm curious what "Asian" mean to you.  Chinese?  Japanese?  What exactly is an "Asian baby"?

anything from Indian to Mongolian, that's what asian means to me.  Even a south pacific Islander would qualify for me.

  • When I say "asian" anyone from the countries of the far east would apply.

I would not include India in my description of Asian. I would just say Indian.

  • That's so interesting! (The part where in europe- asian means India, etc). If I'm being honest, sometimes I forget India is a part of asia, rather than Europe.

Anyway, this baby looked Korean. I think it may have been caused by the fact that I read Us Weekly on the plane earlier in the day and read the Jon & Kate article. Their babies are partially Korean.

  • I had an Indian friend who was in favor of returning "Oriental" to common use for this very reason! ?(I don't use that though as I understand it's offensive to some.)
  • I don't think Indian.

I think Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc...

But that is a really good point Anasara, I never really thought about it.?

See, the Pacific Islander thing is weird to me because I'm part Hawaiian & don't see any cultural or physical similarities between Hawaii & China (just as an example).  But I know the census lists it as such.  This is why I never fill out the ethnicity box: my mom is Irish-American & my dad is Brazilian, but with Portuguese & Native Hawaiian background.  DH is Tamil & Bengali.  Our kids will be the UN!

My Japanese MIL uses this word...I think it's hilarious, because I too have been told that it's offensive.  Guess not!

When I say Asian, I'm referring to Korean/Japanese/Chinese.  Considering DH and family are Japanese, I make as many offensive jokes as possible.

  • My DH is Indian and I don't think of Indian as Asian, although technically that's correct.

Anasara- DH's mom is from the state of Orissa.  It's exciting to think of how pretty our multi-cultural babies will be!
