too narrow for vaginal birth??

Has anyone been told this?

At my very first pg appointment when my first doctor did the pap he told me that I was extremely narrow and a vaginal birth may not be possible and we would address this later because obviously things could change.

Well I switched doctors due to insur and I just had my 38 week app and after my internal he said that I am extremely narrow and he does not think a vaginal birth is possible. He said I can either schudle a c-section or try for a vaginal and hope it works, but in his opinion I would end up with a c-section anyways. Since Ive had two doctors tell me this I feel like he is right and I would hate to try for a vaginal and have something go wrong.

I was just curious if anyone else has been told something similar?

Re: too narrow for vaginal birth??

  • My mom had c-sections b/c they thought she was too narrow. ?Of course, that was back in the day...

If two doctors independently offered that opinion to me, I would probably opt for the c-section. ??

  • I have not had that problem, in  fact the opposite, after #2 was a 10lb the midwife told me, now you know they'll fit!! Ya thanks!!!

But....IMO since you have had 2 docs tell you the same thing I might talk seriously with your doc about options. meaning.....how long will he let you progress before he opts for a c-sections? That would be the key question. He knows you are narrow and if sees you are struggling it may impact his judgement, for the better:).

Good luck! I hope it all goes as smooth as possible!

  • you live im temecula!!! my bro in law lives there, cool place! spending christmas there this year :)
  • I haven't been told this, but one of my girl friends has had 2 planned c-sections because of the same thing.

  • My mom is extremely petite and was told that if I was any bigger when I was born that she would have had to have a c-section. ?I only weighed 6 lbs 3 oz.
  • my cousin was told the same thing, opted not to have the c-section, and the baby's shoulder was broken and they had to use forcepts to get her out. My cousin said she regrets it so much because it made her delivery very paniky and hellish. She said when she was pushing they were calling for all these other dr's and the nurses were pushing on her tummy... and the baby had to stay in the NICU for 4 days because of her shoulder....

  • This is why I ended up with an emergency c-section. I am 5'1 and petite. I labored for 26 hours, dilated to 10, pushed with NO result for 2 straight hours and was beyond relieved to finally get my c-section. I had a 6lb, 14 oz baby born at 38 weeks, so it's not like he was above-average in size. He got stuck in my pelvis and ended up with a huge, subdermal hematoma on his poor little head as well as causing me a lot of pain, despite my epidural. I really valued my birth experience, though, because I know I tried my hardest and ended up with a c-section because it was what was best for both of us. I have no regrets at all!

If it weren't for my narrow pelvis, I'd have definitely tried for a VBAC with my subsequent pregnancies. I won't tell you what I think you should do, but good luck making the decision=) You have the best interest of your baby in mind, so you really can't make the wrong choice.

  • If it was just one doctor I might not worry, but with two telling you this, at different points in the pregnancy - especially now that you're so close - I might just opt for the c-section. I would much rather have a scheduled c-section than an emergency section any day. Even if you did manage to deliver vaginally, if you're as narrow as they seem to think, it would probably be extremely difficult for you and the baby, and you'd probably have a terrible recovery - two reasons one normally avoids c-sections.?

  • My mom ended up with a c/s with me because apparently she was too narrow. ?She was in labor for 24 hours, they tried the vacuum and forceps and nothing worked. ?

  • My OB didn't tell me I was narrow until I was in labor. DS was 6 1/2 weeks early and I delivered vaginally - but she said that if he'd been full term, I'd have had a c-section...and that I might need a c-section on my next one, or maybe having DS stretched me out and I'd be Ok.

I've since changed OB's, and haven't been told anything about being narrow. At this point, I'm more focused on getting full term, and not asking questions that won't apply until I'm 36+ weeks. That being said, I've mentally prepared myself to have a C-section if I go full term.
