I saw a case on Judge Hatchett about that. The child was horribly burned. Just freaking ridic. Whatever happened to french braids and beads?? I didn't get a relaxer until I was 12.
I got my first perm in kindergarten...but we had this talk before about how the two kinds of perms are definitely different.
It's still chemicals and I think a "black perm" is just as bad as a curly perm that white girls get. Judah I was about that age and I hate that my mom did that she should have left me natural and let me decide when I was out her house.

I actually think a "black perm" (or relaxer) is worse because of the lye. We had this discussion before and I'm pretty sure that theirs don't burn if you scratch or if you've washed your hair.
Jade, I got mine without my mom knowing and she was livid.
I used to give my Puerto Rican & Dominican friends "black perms" in highschool. No joke. The chemicals & the amount of hair that fell out was sick. I would NEVER do that to a 3 year old.
I also got "white perms" from the time I was 7 years old. My mom hated my flat straight hair & having to curl it everyday. Either way the chemicals are NO good for a toddler. Why would someone do that to a small child? Idiots.
I am very much against chemicals in kids' hair, which is part of why I started the blog.? We have to identify products and methods that will address the specific needs of black hair, because I can't count the number of friends of mine who permed their little girls' hair and now the girls have no hair and they are teens--which is 10 times worse.
? I also don't like the extensions, microbraids, etc...but it's tough because the ideals they see on TV are still white, long-haired, or black with that in between hair (curly, wavy, straight).? A lot of little black girls don't have hair like that and either want to look closer to that (and it can be heartbreaking) or the hair is so thick and unmanageable (and we're not talking in a good way) that the mothers throw up their hands.??
For my part, DD will not be getting a relaxer until she is old enough to style her own hair and pay for (at least some of ) her hair appointments.? I think another issue is that relaxed hair needs consistent professional care, and should not be cornrowed, braided or mixed with extensions.? ahhh enough.? I agree! (y)
Re: I think it is child abuse
what about highlights?
i'm just talking a foil.
WTH? Who would do that?! Let it go au natural. Big curls are gorgeous anyway.
