How much would you pay for newborn photos? Are you doing them?

I had found a photographer that specializes in newborns. She says for $200, she will shoot our family in her studio and outside for 4 hours. Primarily she will focus on the baby, but she'll also do a few family photos and some of just my older daughter. This seems like an ok deal (no prints though, just online and full rights), but then I think about what I could do with that $200.

DH says book it if I want. I'm usually such a cheapo (DH is completely the opposite), it's hard for me to justify it. I mean, I carry around a $10 bag from Forever 21 that is 3 years old. lol

Are you getting them or doing them yourself? How much are you paying if going the professional route?

Re: How much would you pay for newborn photos? Are you doing them?

  • I am having them done by a friend from college who is launching a professional business. She is giving me a discount, too. ;-) From what I know of newborn photo sessions, that seems pretty reasonable considering you can also have some family photos done.

  • I have a friend coming in from out of town that is a photog. She's doing them for free as a gift. Then my SIL who thinks she's sweet, but has no prior experience is pressuring us to take pics the first week. She wasn't $200, and I laughed in her face. BUT, in your situation, I think $200 sounds good for what they are willing to offer you. I'm not a huge picture person though, so I may not have the best opinion. I just know from having lots of friends that are photographers, that's a pretty good price for a sitting. With full rights, you can pretty much do what you want with the pics. That's how we did our wedding pictures. I just saved them to my comp and sent them to Walgreens.com. You can edit them however you want on your own comp and they print them out for you. Or you can print them out yourself. I just don't have a pic printer.

  • We are doing newborn photos only because I won a session at a silent auction.  I paid $85 for it.  I'm a huge cheapo too.  If you want to get a session - I would wait and maybe do it once your new LO is a little older and can smile and have a little bit of a personality and all -- like more around 3 or 4 months.  That's just my opinion though - infant/newborn pics are super cute.
  • We probably won't do newborn photos, but wait until we go down to Seattle later in the summer and have the photographer that did my senior pictures in HS and our wedding pictures do a family session - he charges around $250 for a couple hours worth of shooting time (with outfit changes) and you get prints and digital copies and full rights. I love his work and it'll be fun to get pictures taken by him in the city we both grew up in.
  • I'm paying $235.  They are going to come to our home too and shoot pics of her here.  They'll also do pics of the nursery.  We get 25 pics and a photo board and online proofs in case we or family want to order them.

Trust me - I am frugal as they come - but I didn't do maternity pics so I could splurge on her NB photos.

  • I payed $150 and it only includes a sitting (no time limit) and online viewing.  Prints, rights, etc are all extra so it's going to be pretty expensive.  I think it's worth it though!

  • That is very good.  We paid $130 for 1 hour here in Maryland for the three of us.  You probably won't do a full 4 hours though, that's a long time for a newborn b/c you'll have to feed at some point in between.  I love our photos, we got them done at 2 months but I wish we had done it sooner.

  • We're using Worthington Photography (www.worthington-photography.com).  Her sitting fee for four hours at our home is $500.  Plus we are paying an additional 150 for "travel" since she lives 1.25 hours from our house.  As with your package, the prints and products, etc are extra.

I think it's totally worth it.  Definitely a splurge, but worth it!  Your package sounds really reasonable--we looked at quite a few other photographers in our area and their sitting fees ranged from 150 to 350.  Some

  • Sorry!

The cost of prints/digital files/products varies so much be vendor as well.  While our photographers upfront costs are higher, her product costs are much lower.

  • That sounds like a good price to me, especially to have the rights.

I would love to have professional photos done, but haven't been ubber-impressed with the local photographers considering their prices. So I'm going to try to take some good ones myself... if I'm not happy, then we might use a professional.

  • We got a packaged deal from our photographer which includes: maternity, newborn, 6 months, 1 year.  Each session is two hours, we get 60 dollars of print credit for each session, and a dvd with limited resolution images (with the option of buying the high resolution with full rights).  The total for all four sessions is 540, but we get 240 dollars of that back in print credit.
  • We will do them ourselves.

  • We're using a local photo studio (not an artistic photographer) for basic shots and will do more artistic ones ourselves or with FIL (pro photographer).  They had a deal going where NB session is free, 3 months is $6.95, 6 months is 9.95, and then 9 months and 12 months are 14.95 each time.  Each session includes all 4x6 proofs that we can keep and then we can order (or not) any prints we want.
  • Ok, so it sounds like the price is pretty reasonable. Her pictures are soo good, there's no way I'd be able to capture anything 1/2 as good myself.

Thanks everyone. I'll probably book it. She'll only be a newborn once in her life Smile

  • We are planning on the pro route. The photos from the photographer are amazing, yes we could do some on our own but I'm planning to have a storyboard and announcements out of these pics. They are pricey but it comes with copyrights and dvd. This is worth a lot to me. There are two different package options. In order to have the above it'll run about $325 with a $50 print credit and she comes to the house within the first couple of weeks to do the pics.

  • I have a friend who is doing them for me. I think I mentioned it to her, but I'm sure she will. She takes great photos and offered to make my announcements, but I'm just going to have her do the photos because I already bought announcement supplies.

  • I am going to shoot them myself. I am a huge cheapy. That being said if I had the money I would get them done professionally just because it is a fun experience.

  • The person who shot our wedding is going to do the sitting for free since we referred so many people who decided to book him.  We will pay for the prints that we want and decide how much or little we want to spend on those.  I would like family pictures that are professional.  MH agrees.

  • i did not do them with DS - we took our own- but since it's twins this time + having DS, too - i wanted a pro so we could get good shots easier.

we hired a photog - she is $250 to come to our house and take the photos and do editing- and inculdes a certain amount of shots- then we pay extra for extra stuff.

  • We are going to have one done at the hospital...then I will take lots of pics at home. I have a 12 megapixel camera that I can play with.

A friend who is getting into photography gave me a package of maternity pics and newborn pics for my birthday. I am looking forward to it!

  • Is the photographer really good?  Your baby is only a newborn once...and if they are going to be creative and excellent portraits then I think $200 is well worth it.  How much did you pay for your wedding photos?  Probably a WHOLE lot more.

As a photographer I couldn't imagine just having a friend do them (unless they are incredibly good) or going to a local department store.  But that's me as a photographer, it's important to me.  Some people don't care...it's all in what you want.

My advice...Try to think about what you would want in the future, not so much now.

I posted the link above. Her photos look really good to me. I love the artsy shots. You are right, wedding photographer was $2400. Yikes!! In the grand scheme of things, $200 isn't too much, especially since this is such a happy time in our lives.

  • We are having them taken. Our photographer charges $160 for 3 hours and then prints on top of that. But she gives us a disk of all the prints!
  • My photographer is in the OC, if you are interested. I am paying less than $200, although I had a package with newborn and maternity photos. Let me know if you want her contact info, my email. sherthebear at gmail.com

Do you have a website? I want to do maternity pics by the beginning of next month and if a newborn session is included, that'd be great!

  • I'm not getting them done. My mother will take so many while she's here (she's a camera freak) that I don't see the point. I know the ones my SIL got at the hospital look terrible, and were a total waste of money. We might, however, go get family pictures done (with some baby alone pics) when he's a few months old.?

  • Brittany Woodall is only $200 - OMG.  I would jump on that in a heartbeat.  Her and her partner Carrie Sandoval are some of my favorite newborn photographers.  I recently told my husband I would love to pay for them to come to us and due LO's newborn portraits.  Those two are just awesome.  I am a pro photographer and plan on doing most myself but am thinking of having another photographer do some also.  Just for others out there remember you get what you pay for.  Your newborn will only be a newborn for a very, very short time.
