Baby Names

And Now, The REAL Top 10 Boys Names!

Same as the REAL Girls Names.  Disclaimer, some pronunciation variations are likely, if I made a mistake please let me know, if I missed a form of Aiden... screw that, it doesn't matter in the end. Aiden kicks the butt of every other name out there.  It's so powerful at this point we could kill off every male WITHOUT the name Aiden and still survive as a race.  You know, once they're old enough to make babies and all that.  But,if I missed a form of Ethan that probably does matter.

And so on.  Enjoy!

Oh, and I have the top 50 boys and girls.  I figure I'll save the big reveal on that one for a weekday when there are more people here.  :)

In conclusion, for the boys, the SSA List was VERY off.  Not a single name I figured for the top 10 is where it is on the SSA list.  Though I honestly chalk this one up to being the multiple ways to spell Aiden/Jayden/Caden.

Also another interesting note.  I think the Hispanic population affects the name list more-so then any other non-English speaking culture.  It's just with the girls, names like Gabriela, Veronica, Isabela, Carmen, etc. are very common even with the non-Hispanic population.  But male names are not.  Diego, Jorge, Jose, Angel, etc. are not names commonly given to non-Hispanic males.  And while only one appears in the top 50 the rest were VERY close!

  • you're like my soul mate!! I thought I was the only crazy one obsessing over the numbers!

ETA: It's interesting to see that with your adjustments the #1 boy name is 32 thousand boys, but the #1 girl name is only 21 thousand.

And what I like to keep in mind is that even though these #1 names seem like the Jennifer of the 80's, they're not even close. Again with your numbers, the #1 girl name is 21 thousand, while in 1980 there were 58 thousand Jennifers! That's quite the difference.

You should see me in Vegas.  :)

  • That is a good point about Jennifers!  In the year I was born (1984) there are AT LEAST 8 names with MORE children named that then the #1 spot, even on my list (Sophia/Sofia).  So either fewer children were born or we have a better variation in names now.

  • Ugh, some of those spelling variants hurt my head.

This is amazing, by the way. Thank you!

There are lots of reasons for this trend of boy names becoming more concentrated among a shorter list, and we have seen these reasons repeatedly here on this board.

Reason #1:  People are usually less creative with boys names because of the long-time tendency to name boys after family (less of a tendency to come up with new names, follow celebrity trends, reach back into history, etc).

Reason #2:  This trend has been increasing lately, I am sure of it - boy names are being co-opted by the parents of girls.  So, the list of acceptable, available boy names is shrinking and the list of girl names is growing.  Girl names are therefore spread out over a larger list and boy names over a shorter list (this is one of my top pet peeves!)

I agree, those spellings for Aidan and Jaden are BRUTAL. Great job on the list!

  • Very interesting!
