Putting LO down in crib at night ?

So I have a "is this normal" question. My DD is a CHAMP at sleeping during the day. We can pick her up, toss her around (not literally) and she would remain sleeping. At night, it a whole other story. After breastfeeding her for about 30 minutes, DD would be sleepy but it takes FOREVER for her to finally go to sleep. It takes over an hour to get her settled and more times than not, she'll way up again and I'll have to start all over.

She's been staying up longer during the day but still takes about 2 long (2-3 hour) naps during the day. I try to keep her up longer but she doesn't stay awake. Sorry for rambling (probably due to lack of sleep) but is this normal? DH seems to think its not but I think it might be. About when does LO start falling asleep better?

 Thanks for you insight!

  • Everything you described is normal.  Babies have their days and nights confused until about 6-8 weeks of age.  So hang in there and keep doing what you're doing.

  • This is completely normal for a LO her age.  It will get better.  And don't think you have to keep her awake during the day for her to sleep at night.  If she wants to sleep, let her sleep.  Letting her get over-tired can make it difficult for her to go down as well.

  • Around 4 weeks we started a bedtime routine so DD would learn that there's a difference between day and night. It took about 4 weeks of doing it consistently, but for the last month or so she's gone down at night at the end of the routine without a fight.

yep, we are big routine people as well.  And sure enough, around 9 weeks, he started STTN.  Keep doing what you are doing and your LO will get the hang of it soon!

  • If the baby is sleepy, let it sleep...trying to keep the baby awake won't help it sleep better at night.
