Bottles for EBF babies

My DD has always refused a bottle.  It's not for lack of trying- she tries to suck, but for some reason never gets any out.  She eats fine from the breast- is growing well and the pediatrician is very happy with her weight gain, so I know she has a good sucking reflex.

Now I am going to work tomorrow night, and our latest bottle practice was once again a disaster.  We only have the Play-tex Ventaire, and every time we've practiced it's been equally as bad.  Any suggestions on bottle nipples that imitate the breast well?  One of my DD's major issues seems to be a quick gag reflex.

Re: Bottles for EBF babies

  • The ones that worked for us are the Playtex drop-ins. Their nipple seems slower than others and that helped DS. We only tried the Medela bottles and Dr. Brown's before we started using the drop-ins and DS would choke on both. We tried the Nuk and Ventair after he started taking the drop-ins successfully and he won't take these.

We use the medela bottles, but I don't think they are close to the breast at all. We also have a Soothie bottle that goes with my manuel pump. DS liked it so much I had to stop using it. I would try the Soothie.

ETA: I don't recommend the Medela bottle if she has a gagging problem. DS chokes on it and gags every now and then.

Playtex drop ins have the slowest flow out of the ones I've tried.  Medela, Dr. Browns, Parent's Choice, Evenflo
  • first years breast flow - you can even find them at some targets

  • DS was refusing bottle as well - he would gag every time.  I tried a million different bottles and on a whim I bought the MAM bottles cause the nipple shape was different.  I have only seen them at BRU, but DS loves those.  He also does ok with the playtex drop-ins but with the silicone nipple.  One thing I did not think of and was a big part of the gagging was the temperature of the milk, I was not getting it warm enough.  HTH
  • we use the first years breastflow bottles.  Never had a problem with them
  • My DS takes the Playtex drop-in slow flow nipples.

  • I disagree with pp. The playtex drop-ins would cause DD to choke...we use Avent, they have a variable flow nipple that mimics the breast- it only has one hole and the milk will come out based on how fast/hard your LO sucks. We used this when she was really young. We have now moved to the level 2 nipple and I am almost thinking she needs the level 3, because they are too slow for her now. I would just buy one of a couple kinds and try them until you find a good fit. This is what we did. Good luck!

This. ?DS also will gag and spit it out if it is not warm enough.?

    ?

  • We use the Avent bottles and have never had a problem. I also used those bottles for DS.
  • We use Born Free (level 1 nipple) and he has never refused it since week 3.  I do have one Mams bottle and even though I like it (he took it too) and he takes Mam pacis...we stuck with all Born Free since I received several of these types for shower gifts.
