VW Jetta + car seats

Hi -?

I was wondering if any of you owned a jetta. ?We are looking at the 2009's and we don't have any kids yet, but will probably have 1-2 before it's time to move into a minivan. ?I know the jetta's are tight in the back, but can you realistically fit a rear-facing car seat in the middle or fit the front facing car seats behind the driver and passenger seats? ?

We looked at the passat's also, but there is a significant price increase for a little more space. ?The engines on the jetta (wolfsberg edition) and the passat are the same, so I don't see the reason in paying that much more for only more room and a few other perks.

When we only had one child DH had a Jetta. We had a rear facing carseat in the middle seat and it fit fine.

I don't own a jetta, but I own a beetle, which is built on the same platform as a jetta just different body shape and only 2 doors. Don't know for sure about the jetta, but the beetle is a 4-seater, not 5, meaning there isn't a middle seatbelt in the backseat. You'll have the option of seatbelt or latch to install a carseat, but both are only offered on the sides, not the middle. In terms of fitting a rear facing carseat, it's tight but do-able. We will have 2 carseats in ours come summer and we know it will be tight, but not terrible. We're more concered with space for luggage, etc.. since our beetle is our only car, but we're looking at solutions for that. We plan to make it work and if once or twice a year we need to rent a larger vehicle, that's okay with us. Still cheaper than a new car and greener than driving a large vehicle every day when we can all fit in a smaller one!

Dh has a Golf (2002) and we are able to get 3 seats in the back. They just have to be the right seats.

I also know several people that were able to get 3 in the back of a Jetta, Jettas are more common around here than Golf's so that is how I found the correct sized seats.

I have a 2008 Jetta (same body styling as the 2009) and it would be hard to do 2 rear facing in the back unless you and your DH are on the shorter side. We have DD's seat behind the passenger seat (would not fit in the middle due to the air vent in the middle back) and the front passenger seat is okay. It would be hard to have her rear facing behind me as the driver. However, once she turns front facing, she could easily fit behind the driver side and then have a rear facing on the passenger side. Hope that makes sense.

We had a Jetta until literally last week and traded it in for a Honda Accord EX. This is the exact reason why we got rid of it as my dh LOVED his Jetta but due to size we had to get rid of it. I should also preface this as my dh had 2 Jetta's prior to having kids. I am 5' 10'' and my dd is 6' and until we had dd we fit fine in the Jetta but we needed the front seats back all the way and no one taller than about 5 1/2 feet would fit comfortably in the back. With the carseat she was fine until she was about 1 1/2 years old and became tall and her feet were bent and very tight behind my seat (passenger). There is not a lot of room in the Jetta and for that reason we had to get rid of it as we are hoping and praying for another child very soon. There is also not a lot of trunk space when you have to fit a stroller, groceries just fit. SO forget suit cases with a stroller if you were going on a vacation because you would have no extra room in the back seat for storage. However, I highly recommend the Honda Accord (and the Civic is cheaper and has the exact same size inside as the Accord) with excellent reviews for safety.
