WWYD should I stop BF

I ebf for 3mo since then I've been supplimenting (due to supply issues). For the past mo I've basically only given formula and maybe about 4oz a day of bm. Its all pumped I haven't nursed for about a month bc I have such a low supply. It takes me 2 -4 times of pumping just to make a 4oz bottle (I know freaking ridiculous) . I feel guilty stopping and am scared I'm going to regret it but my LO isn't really getting that much BM as is. I almost feel like its a waste of time pumping for such a small amount. If you stopped BF did you regret it? Tell me how and why you stopped.

  • If you'd like to increase your supply you may try nursing him more instead of pumping when you can. Then if he's still hungry you can give him the formula after. I'm of the thinking that any amount of BM is better than none. GL!!

Oh I felt the exact same way. Let me find my long post I wrote to labooshki about it.
  • I stopped pumping last weekend and it's been the best thing for everyone. His spitting up completely stopped, my 4 hours a day of pumping to get a measly 12-15oz is now free time, I don't have to wash storage bottles and pump parts all day, don't have to get up in the middle of the night to pump.

He is happy as a clam with his formula, hasn't spit up or had gas issues. It also allowed us to drop one bottle a day (from 6 to 5) because he's not hungry as soon.

I just immediately dropped my 5am pump and started doing every 8 hours, that lasted three days, then every 12 hours for two days. Then I would only pump once I was totally engorged/leaking... and here I am 12 days later and haven't pumped in 60 hours and don't think I'll need to again. It's a little sad, and if my supply was normal I would still be doing it. But the time it took to get 12oz a day was killing me.

  • Kind of in a similar situation.  I'm not producing as much as he needs. I HAVE to pump during the week at work.  However, we were on vacation 2 weeks ago and I tried to nurse as much as possible and I saw NO increase in my supply!

So - in the enxt month or so (maybe sooner), I'm going to start weaning.  I'm just TIRED of pumping. But what I want to do is get down to where I still nurse him in the morning and at night.  If I can do that - I'll do that for a while.

But for the rest of his feedings, we'll be going to formula (and solids, actually!).

  • I've tried nursing and it really doesn't help my supply at all. I've been dealing with this ever since I took 2 BC pills and my supply decreased significantly since then and its never been the same.

Mrs. L- Thats just exactly it I feel like cleaning the pump parts, spending all that time pumping for almost next to nothing, is time I could spend with my LO. That was another ? Am I going to become engorged when I stop, does the milk just go away after while?

I agree with this.  Maybe try talking to a lactation consultant about ways to increase your supply.  But, that said, you have to do what's right for you.  Good luck making a decision.  I'm sure it's not easy.  But your decision will be right for you and your LO.

  • I BF for 11 weeks.  We had to supplement due to supply issues the whole time.  At about 10 weeks my little guy decided he didn't want to nurse at all any more and just refused and fought me the whole time I tried to nurse.  It was so miserable I decided to just pump for a few days instead.  I was pumping for 30 min and getting maybe 1/2 oz.  I decided I wanted to spend that time with N rathan than pumping all day long for a couple ounces.  I was scared I would regret stopping too, but a big part of me was really relieved when I finally decided to stop.  I'm sad that it worked out the way it did, but I think it was the best decision for my family under the circumstances.

Yep, it will stop. My supply has been dropping since mid-Feb so maybe that helped mine stop more quickly. Anytime I felt engorged (which took like 12+ hours for me) I would pump for 8-12 mins. I kept spacing out the minutes I would pump and the # of times per day. I would pump at least a little for comfort and to decrease chances for infection but you just dont need to fully empty.
