NBR: Self-employed...insurance...ugh.

who has private insurance?  and if so, how much do you pay and what does it cover and who should we go with?  ugh.  i hate doing this, we are venturing out into the real world on our own, so no more company insurance.

  • Dh and I have insurance through our companies, but we bought DS his own insurance (it was so much cheaper than getting family plans through employers). We went with BCBS HMO $500 Deductable. It's costing us $340/month. The co-pays are $20 for regular visit, $100 for ER. The deductable applies to non-routine things. Check out BCBS site - it's really good and self-explanatory.

  • We are *trying* to get insurance for LO on our own thru Blue Cross Blue Shield. They turned us down originally because he was treated for reflux when we has 3 weeks old. We had our Pedi write a letter stating he no longer has the issue and we are trying to appeal their decision. Just to insure him alone it is $196 per month on the Balance Plan 2500 (PPO). If we can even get them to approve him. It covers all the well baby visits, immunizations, etc.. Dr. visits are $40 co-pay. I can't recall what our deductible is. Research any companies you are looking to go with online, BCBS are notorious for being horrible and they are definately making us jump thru some hoops. Good Luck!
  • I'm self-employed, and I have private insurance.  Mine is through Aetna, it's a PPO and I think I pay somewhere around $160/month (which includes dental as well).  I have a $5000 out of pocket max for the year (I think we ended up paying somewhere around $2500 for DS's birth, which I figured would be the most expensive medical thing I'd have for a while).  It worked out to be the cheapest plan I could find, even with the out of pocket costs.  The prescription plan with it isn't great, but it's definitely adequate for my needs.

The insurance thing is a PITA, I feel for you.

  • I am self employed and I went through a broker.  DH's insurance is through his job and for all of us to be added to his plan would have been $700 a month.  So I got a plan the broker found with Aetna.  It covers DD and I.  Its a PPO and covers all her routine visits/vaccinations.  Anything over and above that (so if she gets sick) goes towards our $3k deductible.  We pay $236 a month, which I think is a pretty sweet deal.  It will def suck paying the $3k deductible if something happens, but luckily things like prescriptions go towards that.
