Babies: 0 - 3 Months

3rd Tri ? - VBAC moms come in

My doctor says so far that I'm a good candidate for a VBAC.  He said that as long as my cervix is thinning (which is why I had to have a c-section last time-I didn't get passed 50%), the baby is in the right position and as long as the baby isn't "to big" I would be good to go for it.  He has even talked about inducing me at some point to make sure she isn't to big.

My question is: for you ladies who had VBACs (or for you moms who just know the answer) how big is "to big"?  I asked my doctor and didn't really get a straight answer.  At what point did your doctor start helping things along (i.e.-stripping your membranes and what not)?  I have my 38 week appointment this afternoon and am just curious as to what to expect.

I'm pretty nervous about trying for a VBAC so any good advice would be appreciated.  Thanks!

There is no way to know what is too big for YOUR body.  Sorry, there just isn't.  And growth ultrasounds can be off by a pound or more.

I wish I looked as good as you do at 37w!

I planned on VBAC but changed my mind at the last minute. It was a good thing since it has been less than 24m since my last. Had I VBACed the ute was so thin, things would not have turned out well.

This.  And what is considered "too big" varies by practitioner.  Best of luck!

I worry about this!  It has been a little under two years for me.

  • In the research that I've done on VBAC, a big baby isn't necessarily going to prevent or cause problems with a VBAC.  How big does your doc estimate that your LO is?  Have you had a growth u/s?  Although, i don't personally think either of these methods is very reliable (both estimated DS to be 7 1/2 to 8lbs and he was 5lbs 12oz), but it may give you a good indication of size.  I would be more concerned about inducing too early and then needing the c/s anyway.  Personally, I would not be comfortable with inducing before

My c/s was because DS turned breech 5 days before my EDD, but my doc would have stripped my membranes and stretched my cervix at my 39 week appointment.

  • I just VBAC'd three weeks ago and it was an awesome experience.  Thankfully, all of the doctors and nurses at the hospital were patient and supportive of me doing it.

If it's really important to you...I would be very careful about letting them induce-the more interventions you have the more likely it's going to end in a csection.  And the size estimates are almost always off.

The chances of a uterine rupture are *almost* the same as someone who's not had a c...so try to put that out of your mind.

ICAN.org is a good resource to go to.  Good luck...it is totally worth it!

Huge congrats to you!  I just paged you as well.

    I agree 100%.

OP, Being overdue and I'm pretty sure the size of the baby has little, if anything to do with your chance of rupture/VBAC failure (especially the overdue thing).  Being induced, however, increases your chances of failure, and especially rupture, because the pit contractions are so hard.  I would avoid the hospital for as long as you possibly can.  Did you hire a doula?  I am completely planning on hiring one when I go for a VBAC.  They can help immensely.
