Babies: 9 - 12 Months

please tell me I am not alone...

DS is 7.5 months old and still not STTN.  Most nights he is up twice and the only way he will go back to sleep is by nursing. I know he isn't really hungry, but if he is just left in the crib, he will stay awake and eventually start fussing/crying.  Even if left alone, he will not put himself back to sleep unless he nurses to get drowsy or asleep.  He will usually fall asleep on his own when put to bed but not for naps.  I have tried everything!  It seems like he wakes up after every sleep cycle-every 3-4 hours.  I guess he will just STTN when he is good and ready?

  • Sounds just like DD, sorry I have no advice.

  • DS still gets up at least once a night (sometimes twice). But, he drinks a whole 8 oz. bottle so I feel like he's really hungry. DH keeps saying that we need to try to cut out the night feeding by gradually giving him less in his bottle. I don't know what to do either.

  • You are not alone. DS wakes up every night between 2-4 and I just bring him into bed with us and he falls right back asleep. I know, I am creating a monster, but right now I am just too tired to do anything about it.

  • STTN is a developmental milestone just like sitting up, crawling, walking, etc.  every baby does it at a different age.  dd wakes up once to eat in the middle of the night and i don't doubt that she's hungry since once she's done eating i can put her down awake and she'll go back to sleep.

i think it's something you just have to wait out for the most part.

I have tried cutting out the feedings by cutting them down by 3 minutes every 4 nights.  It worked for a while to get us down to one feeding, but now we are back at two.  That is my fault though.  I am just sick of fighting it, and it works out that it is faster to feed him than to shush and pat him to go to sleep (and that usually doesn't work anyway so I am up for an hour trying to get him to go to sleep without feeding him and then I give in and feed him anyway!) :(

Thanks for letting me know I am not alone in this ladies!

  • My 10-month-old doesn't STTN, not for lack of trying on our part! Just not ready, I guess.?

    ?

  • 11 months old here and we do not yet STTN and we have tried lots of different stuff! I guess he will when he is ready.

  • We were able to wean the night feedings using the Sleep Easy Solution.

I knew that if it weren't for those night feedings, he would be STTN. That book has saved my sanity on so many different levels.

He has been STTN now consistently for about a month.

That is how we did it. I dropped 1 oz every 2 days until we were down to zero. I also made sure to add the oz back in during the day.  Worked like a charm for us! (PS this is how Sleep Easy Solution says to do it)

This.  DD is the same way.  As soon as we put her in bed with us, she's back out like a light until I wake her up in the morning.  I need to move her into her crib now (she's still sleeping in her PNP in our room), but I'm not going to feel like dealing with her waking up at 2 a.m. and having to walk all the way across the house to her room, so I keep her with us.

  • 7.5 months, usually DS gets up once a night and drinks an 6 ounce bottle- sometimes doesn't wake up until 5:30 (10 hours)- it's a complete mystery to me- no rhyme or reason to when he sleeps and when he doesn't.  I just hope that the few good nights will lead to more good nights...

We're at 7 months and DD is up 15+ times a night. Literally. Every single night. She wakes every 45 minutes, like clockwork.

I was pretty anti-CIO in the beginning, but I've come to terms with the fact that we have no other option at this point. For us it's not a "waking cause she's hungry" thing. It's a "has no idea how to fall back to sleep on her own" thing, and we've tried every no-cry technique out there. So Ferber it is. Starting as soon as this tooth pops through!

All that to say, you're not alone. :)

  • I've given up the hope of him consistently STTN.  I know this won't last forever, so I've resigned myself to being one tired mama until he is ready.
