Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Am I an idiot - just a self vent!

I am having trouble with this whole formula deal.  I was planning on breastfeeding, but my body had other things in mind, so now I am formula feeding which is a whole new concept.  How in the world are you suppose to travel anywhere with RTF formula if it has to be heated and if I use powder - doesn't that need to be heated at all or just use bottled water?  Am I just not capable of getting this right!  I feel like my DD is a test dummy for my stupidity with this and the end result is a gassy unhappy baby because I can't get this right.  She has such a hard time with the powder because it has so many bubbles.  The gas relief drops aren't even working.  I probably just need to try soy or something!  Help!

  • There's no reason it has to be heated. Room temperature is fine for both RTF and powdered.

Why would you need to heat the RTF formula?  When we had some for DS, we never heated it, we just served it room temp.  If we opened a bottle that was too big and refrigerated the rest for later, we just stuck it under warm water for a couple minutes to take the chill off.  Is your DD used to warmed milk?  Will she take room temp or a little colder?

And we have never heated DS's bottle using powder, either.  All room temp.  It makes traveling so much easier!  I don't use bottled water, I just use the water from the door of our fridge.  I fill up a bottle w/ water and take that with, so it's handy and I don't have to look for a fountain or anything.

  • Yea, you need to heat it.  Make the bottle about 15 minutes early and then heat it up at home... If you are out and about there is a bottle warmer that plugs into your car lighter port.  It works wonderfully.  If your baby is real gassy it's probably b/c the formula is cold.  Even room temp is too cool for babies this young.

  • I never heat the RTF formula if it is in the nursette bottles...that is the easiest way to travel.

I also couldn't use the powder formula for the same reasons.  So we use Enfamil AR and it does come in the nursettes...they are little 2 oz nursettes and you just dump it into your regular bottle...no heating required, because it is already at room temp!

  • If it helps, I don't think you actually have to heat formula (unless it's required for some reason by the specific formula you're using) -- we usually just give it to the babies at room temperature.
  • we only heat it when we're home cause my daughter has reflux. When we are out..she gets room temp. I bring a bottle of water an pour it into the powder already in the bottle .Put a little milocon in the bottle to help w/gas and bubbles in bottles.

I never heat Max's bottles, he will take them straight out of the fridge or at room temp.
  • I should add that my son has reflux and our pedi said this would be easier on him.
