Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

finger dexterity

I'm not sure if I'm expecting too much of my almost 14month DD, but how are your LO's fine motor skills? She can use the pincer grasp, hold small objects, feed herself (even with a fork or spoon), but what I'm curious about is the way in which she does these things. She either closes all or none of her fingers. I point to obejects with two fingers, she uses her whole hand, though pushes her fingers together like a bundle. I watched her pick up puzzle pieces that have little knobs sticking out of them, and she uses the pincer grasp, but doesn't tuck in any fingers like I would. We do Baby Signs, and basically she makes the same sign for milk, lights, and bubbles, and I think she does play (which is just your thumb & pinky extended) but with her hand completely open. Is this normal, unusual, or just one of her traits? Thanks.

Re: finger dexterity

  • Sounds like preference at this point since she is capable of using pincer grasp and holding onto objects. Ask your doctor if you are concerned though.

Also children take a while (about 18 months) before they understand words have particular meaning, so I wouldn't think it would be unusual for a child to use the same sign for different objects at her age. My DS can sign for more, but I truly don't think he equates it to the meaning "more" (he may equate it to milk, toast, or do it when I ask "do you want more" or generally something he does when he is sitting  in his highchair). Like "bye-bye" they don't understand it means someone is leaving at this age and they do it on their own, they just know it is something they do when they hear the words "bye-bye." I am not a doctor, just some thoughts.
