lol i'm serious, i have two boys, both dont have a middle name, but since i am having a girl, i'm rethinking the middle name thing and want to hear reasons as to y some ppl decide on having a middle name for their kids....
Another reason you give your child a middle name is that it narrows down the chances even more that there is another person they will run into in their lives that have their same name. Also some kids hate their first names when they get older and liked to be called by their middle.

I would prefer my kids have middle names for practical reasons. If you named your son John Smith without a middle name, he will have so many issues growing up. I can only imagine that identity theft and fraud is much easier when you only have 2 names. Now if you are naming your kid something really unusual and have a really unusual last name, then I guess its not so bad. I can guarantee that your kids will hate having to explain why they dont have a middle name though.

yup... this is the reason why i'm giving my kids middle names. i don't have one, dh does... i hate my name, dh hates his first but loves his middle name... so we figure that our children will like either name and won't be stuck with hating their only name their whole lives.
aha..i see now. makes sense, i agree with all ur reasonings but first and foremost, i think ppl do it cuz its a trend and cuz it sounds better...although naming after a friend/family is a very good reason as well...i'll think bout it...
2) When a kid hears their first & middle names being yelled, they know they are in deep shiit
LOL! And yes, I guess these are my top two reasons. Although maybe my #2 is that for me it was more a term of endearment -- when my mom calls me by first & middle name, it reminds that I'm still her little girl. And my dad actually calls me by my middle name. Since he's the only one who does that, it's sort of a sweet name he has given me. I will probably call Asher by his mn mostly (it's my maiden name) even though to everyone else he will be Asher.
My dad does not have one, so whenever companies fill out paperwork for him it says his middle name is NMN (no middle name). So, if you do not have one some places give you nmn.
He hates it by the way, and told me to make sure I give my baby a middle name.
I wouldn't call it a "trend"...maybe traditional is what you mean?
Trends come and go, but middles names seem to have been around for a long long long time!!!
Actually there are tons of people born in the teens and 1920's that never were given middle names or just a middle initial...Both sets of my grandparents and many great aunts and uncles.
Dh doesn't have a middle name either but it is because he is from Africa. Before comming here his always just said he has 2 names(one african and one christian) not a first and last name and actually used them in either order. Now he has designated one a last name and one a first name.

Re: whats the point of a middle name?
Is this a real question?
Top 2 reasons:
1) to honor a family member/friend
2) When a kid hears their first & middle names being yelled, they know they are in deep shiit
I just like how names sound when there is also a middle name.
We chose middle names to honour family members.
But you don't HAVE to have them, and if you don't want to give your child one, don't let people make you feel weird for it

Rainbow babies:my reasons are
1. i like the way it sounds
2. if they dont like their first name they can always go by there middle name (dh does this)
3) Harder to get confused with someone else
and 4) beacuse i didnt get a real one and i always wanted one
