Any Moms w/ Scoliosis and/or a fused rod?

If you have scoliosis or a fused rod from scoliosis did it limit you at all during labor/delivery? Were you still able to get an epi? I can't seem to find much info online about this....TIA!!

Re: Any Moms w/ Scoliosis and/or a fused rod?

  • I have a slight curvature in my back and the first labor I had no problems getting the epi. But apparently after having a baby and the bones softening a bit, the curve got a bit worse and the epi was awful cuz they couldn't place it very well.

  • My sister has rods in her back and could not get the epi.   She found out at the last minute, poor thing.  The anesthesiologist took a look at her x-rays and decided it was too risky.

Make sure you talk to the doctor ahead of time so you are not surprised and know your other options!  Good luck!

  • i have a 39 degree thoracic curve-it didn't present any problems during labor, but i didn't get an epidural b/c i had wanted to do natural anyways. ?we did have anesthesia look at my back and he said it would probably be fine but may take longer due to the scoliosis...the thought of him murking around back there was not pleasant!
  • thank you for the responses! kimmiekua, that is exactly my concern. My ob/gyn seems to think it will be no problem, but to make sure I bring an x-ray. She also said I can meet with the anesth. beforehand...but I am just terrified I get in there during labor and they decide not to do it! EEKKK I better take lamaze and prepare myself for the worst!
  • I met with anaesthesia at the hospital about a month before my due date and they looked at my curve and said that I could have an epi, but it might just take a bit to get it into place. In addition I am allergic to medical tape,so they had to give me special tape for my IVs and the Epi. ?When it came time to get it, I had to keep talking with the doctor to let him know if I felt it or not (if you feel it, it is not in the right place), and it worked out fine. ?Best thing is to talk to your OB and then meet with the doctors at the hospital so that they know about your situation. ?Hope this is of help and good luck!!!
  • Yes, I have pretty severe scoliosis.  The anesth had a hard time getting the needle in.  It took three tries and then he went in from the side.  I probably could have saved myself a needle stick if I had remembered and told him!

But the actual epi was great and I had zero complications.
