Need a laugh? How would you pronounce this name?

How would you pronounce this child's name? Le-a (written just like that) Leah?? NO Lee - A?? NOPE Lay - a?? NO Lei?? Guess Again.

It's pronounced 'Ledasha.' Oh yes, you read it right. This child attends a school in Livingston Parish, LA. Her mother is irate because everyone is getting her name wrong. When the mother was asked about the pronunciation of the name, she said, 'The dash don't be silent.'

I slapped my knee about this sure 'nough.

For reals?  Well it's still funny the first time you hear it!  Hehe.  And honestly I'm glad to know there is no such child trying to explain a moronic name.  Phew!

  • Snopes lists it as undetermined whether it is true or not.
  • A friend of mine is a PICU nurse, and swears she had a patient with the name Shithead. Pronounced, sha-theed.

My aunt also swears she had a "Placenta" baby. When she told me that story I wanted to smack her and ask her how she was possibly trying to pass off one of the biggest old wives tales as personal fact. But I bit my tongue and fake laughed instead.

This one's true.  When I was in the teaching credential program, I was helping out in a classroom before the beginning of the year.  The teacher showed me her roster and there was Shithead.  His mom had already seen all of his teachers to make sure they pronounced it correctly.

  • We knew a lady once from Turkey and I am not sure of the spelling, but her name was pronounced very similarly to she-f**k. It was awkward at parties.
  • My neighbor was a teacher for the DC public schools and one year she had a set of twins in her class - a boy and a girl.  Their names were Male and Female - promounced Mal-ee and Feh-mal-ee.Indifferent
