NE1 ever had bleeding nipples?

I have a very bad wound on one of my nips and it bleeds.  I've taken to pumping while it's trying to heal, but what did you do for yours?  Mine is painful even when not pumping.  There doesn't seem to be an infection (nip was tested before the wound)...likely a result of a poor latch.  Any tips on what I should do besides see an LC (I have another appt tomorrow).  I'm currently using neosporin on my nip and it looks better after a few hours of not fussing with it, but as soon as I pump it bleeds again.  :(  So frustrating.  They're not going to tell me not to breastfeed anymore, are they?  I sure hope that's not an option.

  • KEEP NURSING!!!

If you need to use a nipple shield. Use lots of Lanolin cream and you can get some gel soothies also. It will heal up. You could also try rubbing some BM on it and letting it air dry.
I have been there- It is not fun but hang in there!!!

  • Yes, both of my nipples cracked and were bleeding very badly at first. It was so bad that DD had blood in her mouth when she nursed. I just kept putting lanolin on them and used gel pads in between feedings. I fed her on the less sore one for awhile and waited to the scab from the other one fell off. Just keep nursing because it really does get better. I absolutely HATED breastfeeding until about 6 weeks, but don't mind it now.?
  • Yes.  I just used lots and lots of Lanolin.  It really helped them heal.  I put it on before I got in the shower too.  My DS had bloody spit up and everything.  It was rough for a while, but totally worth it in the end.  You just have to nurse through the pain.  And make sure your latch is good.  The LC should be able to help you tomorrow.

  • Same to all the above posts - keep nursing/pumping through the pain unfortunately, but I found that Soothies REALLY helped...saved my life the first week!
