Do you swaddle your baby when he/she is sleeping?

A friend of mine was telling me that sometimes newborns like to be swaddled when they are sleeping, like in the bassinet.  Since the weather is getting warmer, I was just wondering if anyone is doing this?  And if so, is your baby wearing just a onesie or a full-coverage sleeper under the swaddle?  TIA!

  • Swaddle your baby!  It makes all the difference in the world!
At first, I thought it was mean so I didn't really swaddle him well.  He would squirm out of it like Houdini.  Then I watched Happiest Baby on the Block and became convinced swaddling wasn't mean and was just what babies needed so DH and I really swaddled DS well and he loved it.  Well, at first he would cry but after a few days, he started to crave it.  Even now, I swaddle DS for naps and he grins while I'm wrapping him.

I recommend Aden and Anais muslin swaddle blankets, but a lot of people use Swaddle Me and Miracle Blanket.  They seem like they'd be lightweight for summer.

I didn't believe the stuff I read about swaddling.  I thought it was a bunch of hype.

Wow, sorry I asked.  Didn't realize my question was so offensive.

Don't be sorry.  She just likes to stir up $hit.  Apparently that's he job around here.  Your question is legitmate--that's what these boards are for.

  • DS INSTANTLY calms down once he is swaddled...at times, he fights the swaddling process, but once he's all wrapped up, he's fine. We swaddle when he is sleeping at night and during naps (if he needs a long one...every once in a while, he'll nap in the swing without being swaddled).

    1.) Don't take mod seriously.

2.) Swaddling makes a huge difference. It's the difference between sleeping through the night and not.

3.) At first DS seemed to hate being swaddled. We bought the miracle blanket, and he calms at the sight of it.

ETA - We don't swaddle during the day, but I probably should to cut down on his millions of cat naps.

  • We only swaddle at night. Right now we put him in cotton sleep n plays. On days when its hot out and we put him in a onesie. If its cold out or we turn the window AC on we put him in a fleece sleep n play. And we use a miracle blanket to swaddle.
  • We definitely swaddle at night.  During the day not really unless I put her down to nap in her crib.

If it's warmer I just put her in a onesie and swaddle her with a light blanket.  If it's cold I put her in her sleeper and swaddle her in a light blanket still

  • We swaddle DD at night only. She is usually in a sleeper underneath it. On hot nights, I only put a onesie on her. On really hot nights (we had a heat wave a few weeks ago), I swaddle her only with her diaper on. I recommend the SwaddleMe blankets. You can get them at BRU.
